Okay, I admit that I am going to the archives for an art project again this week. I have been sick, and Kennady has been really concentrating on her other schoolwork the past couple weeks (like she needed to!) so we haven't been getting any new projects done. We've been doing some review of European geography recently, so I was reminded of these Ukrainian eggs we'd done a couple of times in the past.

Quite a few years ago in a co-op class we studied Ukraine and the students decorated paper mache eggs using some Ukrainian-inspired design elements.

Easter eggs are a popular tradition in Ukraine, where people have exchanged the eggs as gifts for hundreds of years. The eggs are called pysanky and many of the familiar design elements have symbolic meanings. Traditionally, the eggs are decorated using a wax-resist method that is similar to batik. Hot beeswax was applied in a pattern, then the eggs were dyed and the wax was removed. This was repeated several times until the design was complete.

A couple of years ago, Kennady used markers to add some designs to the paper mache eggs we still had left over from that co-op project!

The colors are symbolic - white stands for purity; orange stands for strength; and black stands for eternity. Some of the symbols you might recognize - the ladder represents prayer; the triangle, Holy Trinity; the butterfly, the Resurrection; grapes, goodwill; and hearts, love. Of course, we know the cross and the fish symbol both refer to Jesus Christ.

If you're like me and not sure you have the patience to decorate eggs (even paper mache eggs!), you might want to start with pysanky coloring pages. Or maybe you're gearing up to color Easter eggs soon! Leave a comment and let me know!
