We just completed our official first semester report card, and have been updating lesson plans for the third quarter, so this is how we're doing:

Grammar and Composition

We started working on The Power in Your Hands from Writing with Sharon Watson just recently, because we had decided to wait until Health was complete before going full on into Composition. Of course, with the holidays upon us at that point, it was hard to get momentum going, so we occasionally worked on the 14-Minute Power Surge writing assignments. Now we're back to writing "for real" and hopefully we'll be able to keep up a decent pace on this through the rest of the year. We also work on Fix-it! Grammar at least once a week - or at least we try. Where we've been slacking is Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization, and I really would like to get back to that, so I'll have to figure out how to schedule it more regularly.

History, Bible, and Literature

We are continuing in Exploring World History from Notgrass, and it's going very well, although I sure would have liked for Kennady to be further along at this point. Still, considering how our December went, it's not bad at all. It's fitting in the Literature that's a bit of a challenge, but we'll make it happen.

Math

Well, if we were behind the pace on this at the end of the first quarter, we sure haven't made up the lost ground. Kennady is still using Life of Fred and does well when she works on it. That's the key - getting her to work on it. Obviously I will need to continue to be "mean mom" about making sure she works on it every day.

Science

I also would have preferred that we were further along in Biology 101 from Answers in Genesis but this is a course that is relatively easy to adjust to fit the schedule. What I really need to do is come up with a couple of good field trips to jump start this, but February is not my idea of a good time to visit the zoo.

Electives - Co-ops and Classes

Health (BJU Press) - She did finish this very shortly after the first quarter ended, so that half credit has been awarded and she is finished the course.

Phys.Ed. - Kennady is back to second semester co-op gym class, so this is an easy credit.

Music - This is also going really well, since Kennady enjoys her guitar lessons and does a great job playing with the worship team at church. Also, she is constantly playing the ukulele, so there are no worries about her practicing! Children's Chorus has been back to rehearsals since the beginning of January, and they are currently preparing for not only their spring concert, but the trip to a chorus festival in New Orleans in the summer.

Art - I suspect we may pull off another half credit for art this year, since Kennady has been doing a few projects and just before Christmas created a backdrop for the kids play. Also, we just got the great news that we will be reviewing Creating a Masterpiece for the Homeschool Review Crew, so she'll definitely be putting in enough time and effort in Art to earn credit!

How is your school year going? Whether you've reached the halfway point like we have, are just starting like our friends down under, or school year-round, I'd love to hear about it, so leave a comment and let me know!

We love the Life of Fred math for Amber too. However, she's ahead - at least overall, with only two math classes left and three and a half years of high school. So we decided at the end of January to let her take the whole semester off from math. It's been a popular solution with Amber, but not so much with her friends' parents. :)
