During the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons, everyone is busy, and homeschool families are no exception. Since we're in charge of our own schedules, we do have the freedom to just carry on with the same school routines we have the rest of the year, or take an extended break and set schoolwork aside during the holidays. But most families are looking for a balance, a way to enjoy lots of special events and activities while making the schooldays count.

My own family always took plenty of time off around the holidays, but unless we were traveling, I left our basic school routine alone. It's not fool-proof by any means, but I planned ahead for a slowdown during the holidays, so that when we got back to the books in January, we were not far off the pace. The total number of days that we could count as school was lower in December, but we tried to make those days count!

Join me over at Heart and Soul for some ideas on how to combine and balance homeschooling and family time during the holidays. As always, you'll find lots of helpful articles there about all kinds of homeschool topics.

I started writing for Heart and Soul (or The Homeschool Post, as it was called) several years ago, when my family looked like this:

Many things have changed since then, and all my students have graduated from our homeschool, so I'm no longer a contributing writer, but I'm thankful that this evergreen article is still available and hope that it is a blessing to you.

We mix Christmas stuff with some traditional schoolwork so we count this month as school too.
