Five Minute Friday - Normal

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

as far as anyone knows, we're a nice normal family
the new normal
once things get back to normal

I'm heartily tired of hearing about the "new normal", to be honest. I want the old normal. Because that's normal. That's just the gut reaction though. If I stop and think, there are aspects of what used to be normal that we could improve upon or do without.

Our normal routine right now is not ideal, not everything we want, and has some definite drawbacks. We are working but our workplaces and hours are altered, and some things are just a pain. The part timers in our house are not working and they will soon need to be, but how will they go about it? The college students haven't had in-person classes or instruction all semester, and that is a big problem for the music major! We have very few social activities or church activities of any kind on our calendar, and while the slower pace has its advantages, we know that this lack of interaction is not at all healthy over a long period of time.

Once we've established a normal setting, we always want to go back to that. It becomes our default, it's familiar, it's predictable, it's within our control, and it's NORMAL. We want to go back to normal, where we were comfortable and safe.

So I still don't want a new normal. I do want to go back to normal, but I want to be thoughtful and wise about that default setting. I don't want to go back to what was familiar and predictable just because it was what we were used to. In many cases, we can do better. Maybe by being choosy about the activities that get added back to our calendar, and only doing things that I really want to instead of everything I feel obligated to do.

I too wonder what normal will look like long term. I'm suspecting more children will be homeschooled, more people will find a way to survive on one income as they have been forced to do so. but I"m wondering if it will quickly return to the same old.

I love that quote by Patsy Clairmont.

It wasn't such a bad old world
that we so lately had
before the yellow flag unfurled
and everything went mad.
It had its imperfections;
no-one can argue that,
but maybe wrong directions
provide the right format
as chiaroscuro needs the shade
that will point out the light,
maybe wrong’s been custom-made
so we can get it right,
and in our having to choose grace
the clouds will part to show God's face.

This is so true. If there is a new normal it will have to include the old normal mixed well the best of the new normal, and it won't be normal for awhile still. :)
