Welcome to Twenty Six Lists! I hope you'll join me in using some fun List prompts for writing. Every other week I'll share a writing prompt and invite you to link up your list, and wherever the prompt takes you. You may want to simply make a list of five or ten items that answer the prompt, or you may elaborate on the items in your list, or even write an entire article. Be creative, and have fun!
What's your favorite season? I'm not sure I have a favorite season because there's something to love about each of them, but I definitely like having a change of seasons! That in itself is a reason to love autumn, because the changing and falling leaves are a clear announcement that it is time to move on to the next season. So what's on your bucket list or to-do list for fall? Here are some things I enjoy each fall or hope to do this fall in particular.
List #20 - Fall Activities
- Visiting state parks - Fall seems like the perfect time to see some of the parks in our area and even a little further afield. The leaves are in full color display, and with the weather a little cooler, I'm more comfortable walking the trails.
- Bonfires and cookouts - it's still beautiful for grilling and smoking, which means I can get the hubster to help with cooking! And although I don't venture out to sit at our firepit very often any more, I really do like time around a cozy fire. Maybe I should plan on having fireside time with family members once a week.
- Fall vacation time - when the kids were younger, we typically took our big family vacation in the fall. Trips to Florida, to western Canada, and even one to Atlantic Canada in the early fall. It worked out well because the weather was still warm, but vacation destinations were less crowded. The last few years it hasn't been as easy to get away during September and October because of our involvement with the co-op, but we are trying to fit in some long weekend trips. We got away on the Labour Day weekend and have a couple more short trips planned before it feels too much like winter!
- Home improvements! In a way this is more of a need-to-do rather than a fun want-to-do, but I really do look forward to getting some of these things done. If only we can find the time. Again, comfortable weather helps, and the approaching holiday season provides a deadline and some motivation. This year we need to work on clearing out our garage, organize and fix up some spaces in our upstairs and our family room, and get some painting and redecorating done.
- Pumpkin and Maple everything - Although I do not like the trendy pumpkin spice lattes at Starbucks et all that everyone raves about all season, I do love pumpkin pie, pumpkin rolls, pumpkin scones, and all the rest. And maybe it's because I'm from Canada, but I don't think you can go wrong with maple flavors. I'm excited to get baking those pies and breads and so much more!
- Double Thanksgiving! This should probably be first on my list because it's something I eagerly look forward to every year. We celebrate Thanksgiving on the Canadian date, which is the second Monday of October, and on the American date. Our Canadian Thanksgiving is often on the Sunday though, since we usually have to work on the Monday. We're still deciding when to celebrate and who to invite to join us for this year's Canadian Thanksgiving, and it's only a couple weeks away!
I took a look back at my previous related list - 52 Lists #36 - Autumn Bucket List - from four years ago and was just a little appalled to realize that a couple of the things from that year's list still haven't been done! We still haven't painted that upstairs hallway! And although I did put together my reading corner in the family room, it never was completely organized to my wishes, and now it's been converted into a temporary bedroom. But it needs a good fall cleaning and organizing, if for no other reason than to ensure that we can get to the woodstove and it's safe for heating the house this winter!
-Paint the upstairs hallway.-Finish organizing the reading corner and bookshelves in the family room. And really, I want the rest of the room tidied and organized before I need to decorate for Christmas!
(Since I teach on Thursdays, I'm having a hard time getting my anchor post up on Thursday MORNING - my apologies! Still adjusting to my fall schedule!)

We always vacationed in the fall too; I am so bummed we can't do that anymore now that my son is in public school.
