Welcome to Twenty Six Lists! I hope you'll join me in using some fun List prompts for writing. Every other week I'll share a writing prompt and invite you to link up your list, and wherever the prompt takes you. You may want to simply make a list of five or ten items that answer the prompt, or you may elaborate on the items in your list, or even write an entire article. Be creative, and have fun!
Okay, I am going to find time to have my list posts ready and scheduled rather than just . . . ready. Because my Thursdays are very busy, and if my Wednesday is crazy like yesterday was, my post may not be published early in the day. Anyway. Enough excuses, let me get on to my list of museums!
Some of these museums that we've visited have appeared on my other lists because they were good field trips or something. These are museums that stood out in my memory, some because they appeal to my particular interests, and some because they surprised me in how much I enjoyed them.
List #23 - Museums
- Living history museums are likely to be among my favorites, because I'm so drawn to history and enjoy getting a chance to experience a little taste of it in those settings. St Mary's City is a wonderful living history museum right in our state, on the eastern shore of Maryland. It's a bit of a drive but still a very doable day trip. At Historic St Mary's City, visitors can see what colony life was like in in one of the earliest permanent British settlements in North America, dating back to 1634. There is a working print house, an apothecary, a tobacco plantation, and the state house. There's also a replica of the ship that carried the first settlers to Maryland's shore. The Colonial Quarter in St Augustine, Florida is one of our favorites that's farther from home! It's near the Castillo de San Marcos, and offers a glimpse of how the Spanish colonists lived during that time. One of the characters we met on our visit a number of years ago was a scribe-churchman. He explained to us that our family's British last name would likely have cost us our freedom, and perhaps our lives if we'd visited St Augustine during its Spanish heyday. Religious tolerance was not their strong point! Better and safer for us that we visited in the twenty-first century! Genesee Country Village and Museum near Rochester, NY is a small living history museum that was a pleasant surprise with the many buildings and immersive experiences tucked away in a rural part of the state. For more about St Mary's and St Augustine, see my post: From the High School Lesson Book: St Augustine and St Mary's
- My family really enjoys visiting lighthouses, and quite a few of them do have museums attached. Our favorite has been the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse in Florida. My post History Lesson - Lighthouses explains more!
- Years ago I wouldn't have guessed that I would be the kind of person that would enjoy art museums. Surprise! They aren't necessarily the highbrow black-tie places you might expect. We've visited the Baltimore Museum of Art on a couple of occasions and while there is that hushed museum atmosphere in many of the rooms, it is still quite interesting for all ages and there's plenty to interest you even if you're not majoring in Art History. We also really enjoyed the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum at the Ohio State University Libraries in Columbus and it was certainly not dry and highbrow! It featured superhero cartoon and comic book art, and my favorite comic strip, Calvin and Hobbes! See my posts: Baltimore Museum of Art Field Trip and Virtual Refrigerator - Cartoon Museum Art Field Trip.
- The National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. is similar to an art museum in that there's a lot about architecture and design that is truly artistic. You can learn about those aspects of buildings, as well as history, engineering, and several sciences. See my post: A National Building Museum PhotoJournal.
- The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia has fascinated our family on a few occasions, with a wide variety of permanent exhibits, and the special exhibits that we've gone to see have included the treasures of King Tut's tomb and the Dead Sea Scrolls.
- Obviously, all the Smithsonian museums in Washington, D.C. are well worth the time to visit! Each one is a full field trip day on its own.
- The last one for my list today is one that was a surprise to me - the AACA Museum in Hershey, PA. It's an antique automobile museum, and honestly I've got nothing at all against cars, but it probably wouldn't have made my personal To Visit list. It was on my husband's list of places to visit so I went with him and it was very cool. It's an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, and exhibits feature Mustangs and Thunderbirds. (Also, who knew there are attractions in Hershey that are not chocolate-related?)
Here's a few photos from some of the museums listed above:

We really enjoyed the AACA museum in Hershey! I dropped the ball on this list this week; sorry! Off the top of my head I'd have to say we're more of a science museum kind of family and some of our favorites include the Boston Museum of Science & the Adventure Science center in Nashville. My middle son and I enjoy art museums and our favorite was the Chulily one in St Petersburg, Fla. We have a few really wonderful living history museums near us with Old Sturbridge Village, Plimoth Plantation, & Mystic Seaport.
