Five Minute Friday - Redeem

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

redeem the time
redeeming qualities

********************
Redeem is a word we don't use much in everyday speech. I guess we redeem coupons sometimes, but if that's the only association we have with the word, maybe we don't recognize how valuable redemption is.

When we mention redemption, Christ-followers can probably think of songs that mention it or have an idea about the concept. but do we know what it is to redeem something, what's involved?
redeem - (verb) compensate for the faults or bad aspects of something; gain or regain possession of something in exchange for payment.
We've been redeemed. If we've accepted Christ's payment on our behalf, God has regained possession of us. It was a big price to pay. And Christ continues to compensate for our faults because his blood covers our sin and the Holy Spirit intercedes for us.

What can we redeem? The first thing I thought of is time. "Redeem the time". This past year, especially, seems like time lost. Time wasted. Time taken from us. If we hid from the world and waited until getting the all clear, we might have lost valuable time. We can't get time back, not really. But perhaps we can redeem it. Starting now, let's use it wisely. Time is short.

Those of us that feel comfortable being out and interacting with others should be out there living boldly and leading the way, but with wisdom and kindness. Those that feel they should stay at home a bit longer should be using that time creatively and continuing to serve and pray.

Time is short. Wake up. Pray up. Let's use the time we have wisely. Let's make up for time we've lost by doing better.

Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.
~Colossians 4:5~

See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
~Ephesians 5:15-16~

"I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten - the great locust and the young locust, the other locusts and the locust swarm - my great army that I sent among you."
~Joel 2:25~

Redeem thy misspent time that's past,
And live this day as if thy last.
~Thomas Ken

I appreciated your encouragement that whether in or out of the house, we should be using our time wisely for the Lord.

Yes, I agree that this past year has brought thoughts of redeeming time--especially redeeming time with family. We had to put off the memorial for my mother who passed away in December. We are planning an outdoor memorial with extended family in May.

Time is getting mighty short
so we'd better use it well,
not as leisure or as sport
for those now pave the road to hell.
I can see the day's dark signs,
see the writing on the wall,
see the devil's fell designs
that I do not like at all,
and I think we should consider
how we spend these precious days,
not just singing to deliver
hallelujahs, shouts of praise,
but rolling up the work-shirt sleeve
to truly show that we believe.

Actually, the best thing (for me) that came of 2020 was the gift of time. When so many things were automatically cancelled from my calendar, it gave me time to sit with the Lord and discern where I needed to add back activity when the time came. 100% yes, that our time--whether virtual or in person--can, and should, be used to serve the Lord.

Redeeming the time for Christ requires such dedication. You did a nice job showing that here.
