Five Minute Friday - Fast

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

they grow up so fast
make this fast
time goes by so fast

Time is standing still. We are measuring ourselves by how far we are going. ~Debasish Mridha

Time is a funny thing. It's how we measure the rhythm of days and seasons, and those rhythms don't change, yet we feel like time is going by faster or slower depending on our perspective. Parents really feel this! When our kids are young, we're reminded to enjoy them when they are little because they grow up so fast. Sometimes that's hard to believe during the long nights with a fussy baby or the long days with an overly energetic toddler. And when our kids are older, nearing graduation or heading off to college, we are breathless at how quickly all those years have gone by. How is it possible that our babies are grown up and getting married and having babies of their own?

For the young the days go fast and the years go slow; for the old the days go slow and the years go fast. ~Anna Quindlen

Over the past few years I've found myself winding down after a family occasion like Thanksgiving or Christmas and realizing that it all went by so fast that I didn't get any pictures. Sometimes it seems so long until the next time I'll see family or friends that live far away, yet the time together seems to fly by. In my day to day world, I get impatient for things to move along when I'm not enjoying myself, yet I also find myself lamenting that an entire day has gone by and I didn't get the things done I'd wanted to - the time went by too fast! It's frustrating, isn't it? To be so focused on the perception of time passing that we don't spend that time wisely.

I'm a procrastinator and a live-in-the-moment kind of person, and although living in the moment usually helps me to fully enjoy what each day has to offer, my procrastination habit often sabotages my efforts to spend time wisely. Life goes by so fast, it's easy to lose balance. The balance I need is to use my time well and not put things off, and continuing to embrace the here and now.

Show me, LORD, my life's end and the number of my days;
let me know how fleeting my life is.
~Psalm 39:4~

Be very careful, then, how you live -- not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. ~Ephesians 5:15-16

Our days may come to seventy years,
or eighty, if our strength endures;
yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow,
for they quickly pass, and we fly away. . .
Teach us to number our days,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom. . .
Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love,
that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. . .
May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us;
establish the work of our hands for us --
yes, establish the work of our hands.
~Psalm 90:10, 12, 14, 17~

I love this, and totally agree. Time does go so fast. I say it all the time that my kids have grown up too fast (19, 17). I wouldn't go back but I do my best to enjoy each stage we are at.

Enjoy the now, it won't be long
until these precious days have flown,
and you'll sing that saddest song
for the flower bloomed and blown.
Enjoy the time and drink it in,
quaff its nectar to the last,
for all ambition's going to win
is knowing it all went too fast.
Enjoy the friends and family
(yes, even Crazy Uncle Ed)
for after all, eternity
is rushing up, and just ahead,
and treasures that you love and hold
will form your crown of God's own gold.

Kym, such good thoughts here on time. Like you, I feel like too often time passes too quickly (and I never get pictures), yet at the same time I am desirous of redeeming the time, for we have but this one life!

My eldest granddaughter got married last year! Where has that time gone!
You're most welcome to join me in a cuppa at Tea With Jennifer ☺️

So very true. We can only balance our time wisely as we redeem the time day by day as He leads. Thank you as I needed this reminder today!
