Five Minute Friday - Run

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

run like the wind
run away
run to you

********************
I don't like to run. Even if I was capable of running, it wouldn't be the exercise I'd choose. I'd much rather walk. I remember how much fun it was to run around when I was a little kid, and the feeling of relief after running laps during gym classes when I was a teen. But all the same, running has never been my workout of choice.

Today I have an appointment with a doctor to plan for a knee replacement surgery. Whenever I visit this orthopedic clinic, I notice how many different kinds of patients are there. Young and very fit athletes with sports injuries to elderly folks crippled with arthritis. I'm getting closer to that elderly and crippled demographic, but I'm hoping that a new knee will make a big difference in my mobility and make it possible for me to walk again. I have no plans to run, just to walk comfortably and freely. Without constant pain and without needing a cane. So I'm excited about the possibilities, but I'm also a little fearful, and will probably feel that fear even more acutely when the surgery date is established and coming closer. I'm afraid of surgery and anesthesia and stitches, and worried about the pain of recovery and rehab. I tell myself it will be worth it, and that I'm better off doing it now rather than putting it off.

Our spiritual fitness level is also worth it. We may be afraid of the changes we need to make in our lives and thinking, or that God might ask us to do something that frightens us or will be painful. We're often reluctant to discipline ourselves to do the daily exercises required to rehab from our bad habits and to keep ourselves in shape. But it is worth it. And we should never put it off.

No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. "Make level paths for your feet," so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.  ~Hebrews 12:11-13

I know quite a bit about weak knees and my physical knees sure need to be strengthened. I don't want to be disabled by neglecting the treatment available for my arthritis. I'm looking forward to the healing after the surgery. It will be wonderful to be able to go for long walks, to have a better chance of keeping up with energetic grandkids, to have fewer limitations. But to get there, I'll have to submit to a surgery and recovery that will be painful, and I'll have to stick to level paths during that recovery period.

Even if you're like me, and not interested in running a marathon or even a 5K, do take the time to be disciplined and get in shape so you can keep running and walking with the Lord, wherever he leads you; and running straight to him when he calls.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. ~Hebrews 12:1~

I instruct you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.
When you walk, your steps will not be hampered;
when you run, you will not stumble.
~Proverbs 4:11-12~

I run in the paths of your commands,
for you have broadened my understanding.
~Psalm 119:32~

The name of the LORD is a fortified tower;
the righteous run to it and are safe.
~Proverbs 18:10~

I can understand your apprehension about an upcoming knee surgery. Praying for your peace of mind and heart, and the courage to face your fears along with the strength needed for the recovery the recovery process. May you come out on the other side with a spring in your step and a smile on your face!

oh, but we do need to be disciplined in so many areas of life don't we? FMF21

We should run like those who have been taken hold of by Jesus for the prize. And what a prize we run for, eternal life and living water. I pray your knee surgery goes well. I was supposed to have a knee replacement years ago but chickened out. Blessings.

And so you need another knee,
according to that which I just read.
I wish you well, but as for me,
I could use another head,
one that has not been employed
as hammer, once and then again;
a case, perhaps, for Sigmund Freud
on the tolerance of pain,
but really, I am not a fool
scrabbling sanity's edges;
I just forgot to bring the tool
to set the concrete-form wedges.
It's a good trade, brain's not confused
by this use; it's nowt been used.

Yes, I really did use my head to drive in wooden wedges for alignment.

So?

Bless you in your journey ahead. Everyone I know having new knees have been delighted with the results. Enjoy the enforced rest with the Lord. Dawn FMF 31

Your post is so encouraging and inspiring and challenging, Kym. I'm not lining up for knee surgery, but have been in heart surgery for months and I know how much I've shrunk back from that. But it's good to be reminded of the benefits that come from submitting to Him and His process. Thanks for sharing.
