One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

be thou my vision
without a vision the people perish
20/20 vision

What a gift it is to have vision! Seeing the world around us, being able to see faces of loved ones, and to be able to read. In my family, we all wear glasses although the amount of correction we need varies. One of my sons had laser surgery a few years ago and he is the only one who doesn't have to wear glasses any more! Another son is very nearsighted and very dependent on his contact lenses. He had to have surgery to repair torn retinas when he was just a teenager. I had tears in my retinas repaired last year, although they weren't as serious. Our parents and other family members have had eye problems. One relative of mine is functionally blind, and it has been extremely difficult for her to accept that she cannot read any more.

We go to great lengths and expense to repair and protect our vision. Almost sixty percent of Americans wear glasses, and about twelve percent wear contact lenses. Vision care is a multi-billion dollar industry in America, and the eyewear market is expected to increase every year going forward.

But there's a lot more to vision than just the ability to physically observe using our eyes. Vision can also be defined as an ability to anticipate what will happen or the sense of looking forward with anticipation and a plan. Business leaders and coaches need to have that kind of vision in order to adjust quickly to changes, to motivate and to inspire.

Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality. ~Warren G. Bennis

Leadership is about vision and responsibility, not power. ~Seth Berkley

I think in the world of business, you either have vision or you don't. But in God's kingdom, we need vision too. And we need to be in line with the vision God has for us and for our communities, and our world. That kind of vision brings hope and encouragement, and helps us persevere. As Christ-followers, we need to see what God sees, in ourselves and in others.

Where there is no vision, there is no hope. ~George Washington Carver

Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained.
But happy is the one who keeps the law.
~Proverbs 29:18~

I thought immediately of the old hymn, "Be Thou My Vision". It's a very old Irish hymn, written in about the eighth century in honor of St. Patrick. In the early 20th century, it was translated in English.

You Are My Vision

You are my vision O King of my heart
Nothing else satisfies only You Lord
You are my best thought by day or by night
Waking or sleeping Your presence my light

You are my wisdom You are my true word
I ever with You and You with me Lord
You're my great Father and I'm Your true son
You dwell inside me together we're one

You are my battle-shield sword for the fight
You are my dignity You're my delight
You're my soul's shelter and You're my high tower
Come raise me heavenward O Power of my power

I don't want riches or man's empty praise
You're my inheritance now and always
You and You only the first in my heart
High King of heaven my treasure You are

High King of heaven when victory's won
May I reach heaven's joy O bright heaven's Son
Heart of my own heart whatever befall
Still be my vision O Ruler of all

Getting to know God through his Word and through prayer is the way to have his vision. May we put at least as much effort into improving and maintaining our spiritual vision as we do in protecting our eyesight.

Without vision people perish,
that is really plain to see,
so God gives sight for He doth cherish
the sinful likes of you and me.
He gave us eyes but He can't make
us use 'em right, that is our call;
if you need example take
the pretty fruit that caused the Fall.
There's nothing wrong with oilfield lights
and cattle 'neath the Texas sun;
let your eyes behold these sights,
but Bubba, when the day is done
use 'em for a better mission
than SI's Swimsuit Edition.

Well-written and to the point, leadership isn't about power to dictate edits, its about a common vision for the welfare of all people, including the unborn.
