Five Minute Friday - Be

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

be all that you can be
be prepared
to be or not to be
be strong and courageous

********************

We are always so busy and driven to do things. Check things off the list, get stuff done. Do all the things. While doing the right things is important, being the right kind of person is more important. Doing all the things won't be worth much if we don't have our hearts and attitudes in the right place to begin with.

My God loves me because he IS love and I am his, not because of things I do. But because of my love for him, and because I am his, I am motivated to do the things. The doing is part of the equation but it's linked to the being.

I thought of Joshua, who received many commands from God to "be strong and courageous" and his deeds fell in line with that. God challenged him to be strong and courageous so that he could lead the people into the promised land, and he was successful in what he did as a result of who and what he was asked to be. Be a strong and courageous man, and you will do these things, and as you do these things, you'll become strong and courageous. What an example!

Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them. Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go. ~Joshua 1:6-9

Our deeds alone will not save us or earn us a place in heaven, no matter how mighty. The obedience and the doing of righteous works that grows out of BEING who God calls us to be are evidence that we are saved. Be faithful, and you will do things that show your faithfulness. Be kind, and you will do kind deeds. Be obedient, and you will act in obedience.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves. It is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast. ~Ephesians 2:8-9

I was on vacation last week, and although I planned ahead thinking that I would be able to write a five-minute post sometime on Friday, that didn't turn out the way I expected! I had the opportunity to do fun things with my family on the weekend, and that's what I did! Being family-focused led to doing family-centered things. And that's why this post is so late. Also, I've had a tough time figuring out how and when to contribute to this blog during a busy summer with ever-changing schedules. I guess I'm still trying to figure out what I want to be when I 'grow up'.

This post is linked at Five Minute Friday for the word prompt "Be".

Joshua 1:9 is one of my favorite verses. Thank you for your words. By the way, I took a brief look at your blog. The "Share Four Somethings" reminded me I once participated this too. Maybe I should pick it up again. Really nice.

Kym, I appreciated your words today. Sometimes we just need to let our beingness be, and let it turn into action. Your closing words made me laugh! Figuring out life as we grow up is a constant balance isn't it?

Oh, I am so very grateful that not only my salvation but also His love for me is secure by who He is....and not by what I do (or did)! Great reminder!
