From the High School Lesson Book - A Year End Summary for 2018-2019 on Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

Goodness, I submitted final grades, got her high school transcript, and we celebrated Kennady's graduation a month ago, but I never did summarize the school year here! I think it's only fair that I do it, since it's a bit of a tradition for me.

Grammar and Composition

We used Writing Fiction [in High School]: Bringing Your Stories to Life! from Writing with Sharon Watson in a co-op class for Kennady's composition credit. The class was a lot of fun, and as the instructor, I really enjoyed the students' stories. The students wrote a lot of scenes and short stories, and often we learned about elements of fiction by reading or discussing novels, particularly the required reading for the class, The Last Book In The Universe. We also watched movies and movie clips to see fiction elements in action. Writing is one of Kennady's strengths so she rocked this class that was almost like a bonus English credit. I've written about this course here and there throughout the year, but haven't written a full review of it - but I will plan on doing that sometime soon!

Math

Kennady needed one more math credit before graduating, and I require my kids to do a Consumer Math course during high school, so we cobbled together a couple of things. I found a media-based half credit course called Money 101: Seminars in Personal Finances at SchoolhouseTeachers.com and started with that. I picked up an older Bob Jones Consumer Math text secondhand and assigned some chapters from that. We originally planned for her to do this course in second semester, but changed our timeline a bit when she decided to do an extra half-credit course at co-op. Her course load was very full at that point, and she also did a Dave Ramsey personal finance small group at church, so I allowed her to put this at the bottom of the priority list, and focus on it when co-op ended. When she got back to it, I also said that she could skip (or just quickly skim) anything in the textbook that had been covered in the small group. So most of this course is complete, but she is still finishing up the rest of it over the summer.

History, Bible, and Literature

Kennady also completed American History at the co-op. We used Exploring America from Notgrass so she earned a full History and full Bible credit, and a half credit in American Literature. Kennady struggled a little in first semester with writing tests. She knew the material but couldn't always recall the details or come up with them when under a bit of pressure. This was a good opportunity to work on some study skills! During second semester I did a lot of the unit quizzes as a class review activity, often turning them into a game show format. We had a lot of fun with those, especially when we played Who Wants to Be a History Major?

Electives - Co-ops and Classes

French II - Kennady completed this at the co-op and did very well. I was kind of hoping that she would want to visit Quebec for the Summer of Kennady and test drive her conversational French, but that was not to be.

From the High School Lesson Book - A Year End Summary for 2018-2019 on Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

Introduction to Business and Entrepreneurship - True confession: the main reason Kennady wanted to take this co-op class in second semester was because she enjoyed her instructor and classmates so much! It was the same group from the Speech and Presentation class, and taught by the same instructor. They read The Autobiography of Andrew Carnegie and the Gospel of Wealth (Signet Classics) and used that as the basis for some of the lessons. The instructor gave a lecture on business principles each week.

Children's Chorus -  It was Kennady's final year in this upper level chorus. It's an excellent program that provides outstanding music education in choral singing, so a full Fine Arts credit.

Guitar - Kennady continued playing on worship teams and writing and performing some of her own material. For part of the year she also worked on the Guitar 360 Method, which is a 13-week self-paced course. She didn't complete the course, but when she had time it made a great alternative to guitar lessons during this very busy year. Guitar 360 is internet video-based, so she could work at her own pace, whenever it worked in her schedule.

You can read our full review here: Guitar 360 Method - A Homeschool Coffee Break Review

Guitar 360 Method - A Homeschool Coffee Break Review for the Homeschool Review Crew on Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

Piano Tuning and Technology - This was her technology credit, and involved a lot of on the job training, sort of a preview to apprenticeship. Kennady works part time at the music shop where her guitar teacher is a piano technician, and they were training her to work on pianos - repairs and rebuilds of the action and insides of pianos. She really enjoyed it, even though she decided she did not have time to pursue the full time apprenticeship while also being a full time student in college.

Final credit count for the school year = 7.5
Previous credits earned = 23.5

Graduating with a total of 31 credits (23 required to graduate) and a 3.9 GPA.

Homeschool Highlights - Teacher Appreciation Week on Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

Welcome to Homeschool Highlights!
This weekly link-up is your opportunity to share some highlights of what is happening in your homeschool and in your world each week. If you write a wrap-up post at the end of each week, like I've been doing, we'd love to see what you're busy with from week to week. If you'd like to pick a favorite post from your week that spotlights a resource or activity in your homeschool that you'd like to tell others about, we're interested in those too. I'm keeping the guidelines as simple as I can, and they will appear at the bottom of each post, along with the link tool. I look forward to getting to know you, and I hope this will be a source of encouragement and good ideas for all of us.

Grab a cup of coffee and let's get started!

Homeschool Highlights - Teacher Appreciation Week on Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

Something about the colors of this mug make me think of spring!

Homeschool news  . . . This week has been spent wrapping up the final projects for co-op and preparing for the final test in French class. Yesterday was the final day of co-op, so class time was spent tying up some loose ends and doing final tests. With one exception - Creative Writing was finished with assignments last week, so we started watching a movie. We finished up the movie Tangled this week and discussed the plot themes and tropes in it.

Following the last class of the day, we had an ice cream social and some of the classes did a bit of presentation. The two French classes got together to sing a couple of French songs. The girls in French II sang the French national anthem, and then the French I students joined them to sing a silly song - Napoleon. It's a song kind of like B-I-N-G-O, where you drop the last syllable of the line each time you repeat the song.

We really appreciate the teachers at co-op! They do a great job teaching the material, but they go also go above and beyond, taking personal interest in the students and making it fun as well. And Kennady's Speech and Business instructor has done an especially great job of connecting with the students and building them into a tight friend group as well as just being classmates.

The other thing we worked on this week that was school-related was scrambling to get a scholarship application done. It's a music scholarship so Kennady will be recording her audition CD tonight. (And we really appreciate the music teachers that are going out of their way to supply her with recommendation letters!) Wish her luck!

Other news . . . on Friday evening the kids and their friends took over my kitchen and dining room to bake several batches of cookies for a bake sale they were running on Saturday morning.

Kennady didn't help with the sale for very long because she had to be on the bus to her final dress rehearsal for a Children's Chorus performance on Sunday. After church on Sunday, she and I had a quick lunch and then picked up a friend of mine and headed for the concert.

It was Kennady's last day as a member of the Children's Chorus, so I thought it important to get photos of her with her directors. Apparently someone else got pictures of the graduating seniors with their director, so I'm waiting on copies of that.

Homeschool Highlights - Teacher Appreciation Week on Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

After this photo, Kennady changed her clothes and donated her uniform back to the chorus, turned in her music, and we headed home. She was more emotional about that than she'd expected, and cried for about half the ride home.

My choir concerts were on Monday and Tuesday so those were full and busy days. And now that my choir season is also over, we're looking forward to less hectic Tuesdays!

On Wednesday evening, Kennady went to a bonfire and I did some shopping; and on Thursday I was out at one last Homeschool Moms Night Out before school ends. And it also served as one last planning meeting for our Homeschool Fair, which happens tomorrow!

\What's Coming Up . . . the first ever Homeschool Fair focused on our county and sponsored by the homeschool fellowship group I'm with! We are pretty excited - maybe just a bit nervous!

A Dangerous Collaboration (A Veronica Speedwell Mystery) by Deanna Raybourn
The Rock, The Road, and the Rabbi by Kathie Lee Gifford

A parting shot . . . a sample of the Canadian food haul that my mom sent via my sister a couple weeks ago!

From the High School Lesson Book - Mid-Term Update for Senior Year

This post contains affiliate links - using affiliate links from Homeschool Coffee Break helps fuel this blog and our homeschool - thank you!

Mid-term Update for Senior High on Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

It feels like a very long time since I've done this type of post, but since I was working on semester grades and a mid-term report card this week, it's obviously on my mind. Our first semester has been largely successful, but we've made a couple of changes to our original plan for the school year too.

Grammar and Composition

We are using Writing Fiction [in High School]: Bringing Your Stories to Life! from Writing with Sharon Watson in co-op. We're having fun with the class, and Kennady is doing really well with her writing. I'm enjoying the stories the students have been writing, and many of them are very funny and entertaining. So far we've learned about point of view, fairy tales, characters and characterization, conflict and tension, and dialogue. We just started working on description and settings, and I don't think I'll have to tweak the lesson plan in order to finish the book by the end of the school year. Provided we don't have any more snow days!

Math

Kennady needs one more math credit, and I require my kids to do a Consumer Math course during high school, so we'd planned to combine Money 101: Seminars in Personal Finances from SchoolhouseTeachers.com and a Consumer Math text. I'd already planned the course, and have it ready for Kennady in second semester, but I think we may tweak this a bit. The base will still be Money 101, which is a media based course worth a half credit. But I think I'll cut back the amount of work I'll want her to do in the textbook. She'll be taking a related course at co-op that may provide some of the business type math, and she may be participating in a small group at church that is doing a Dave Ramsey course.

What Curriculum Are You Using in Your Homeschool? - 5 Days of Homeschool Encouragement for Back to School 2018-2019 Blog Hop - Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

(By the way, SchoolhouseTeachers.com has a ton of courses to choose from for all ages, and is always adding more to its already extensive list of resources. If you're needing to add to, change, or just tweak your curriculum plan, as many of us do around mid-term, SchoolhouseTeachers.com may be just what you need. Especially with the 2019 Fresh Start, New Year Special pricing right now.)

History, Bible, and Literature

American History is another course she's doing at the co-op. We're studying Exploring America from Notgrass.  We're doing a full History and full Bible credit, and a half credit in American Literature. This class has gone well, although probably not quite as fun as the Creative Writing course. Kennady is finding out that she has trouble writing tests, even when she knows the material. She has trouble remembering the details and coming up with them when under a bit of pressure. Study skills are something we'll need to work on in second semester, so that she can be prepared for college!

What Curriculum Are You Using in Your Homeschool? - 5 Days of Homeschool Encouragement for Back to School 2018-2019 Blog Hop - Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

Electives - Co-ops and Classes

French II - Kennady is continuing this course at co-op and is doing very well.

What Curriculum Are You Using in Your Homeschool? - 5 Days of Homeschool Encouragement for Back to School 2018-2019 Blog Hop - Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

Speech and Presentation II - Kennady loved the public speaking class in first semester, and I think she aced it! In fact, she enjoyed it so much, she decided to take the class offered by the same instructor in second semester, and that will be . . .

Introduction to Business and Entrepreneurship - This class started today and will focus on aspects of running a small business. They will be reading The Autobiography of Andrew Carnegie and the Gospel of Wealth (Signet Classics) and drawing on that for some of the lessons. It's a half credit course, and I'm also hoping that it will give her a boost of motivation and confidence to make some career decisions.

Children's Chorus -  This is Kennady's final year in this upper level chorus. It's an excellent program that provides outstanding music education in choral singing, so a full Fine Arts credit.

Guitar Lessons - Kennady has continued playing on worship teams and writing and performing some of her own material. We'd hoped that we could make time for her to go back to lessons with her instructor but her schedule is just so full! A couple of months ago, we reviewed the Semester 1 Bundle from Guitar 360 Method, which is a 13-week self-paced course. She hasn't done much with it recently, but this is now our alternative to guitar lessons. She's got enough experience to be able to work on her own, and the beauty of Guitar 360 is that it's internet video-based, so she can work at her own pace, and whenever it works out. She doesn't need a ride to a lesson and doesn't need to plan around a set half hour on a set day of the week.

You can read our full review here: Guitar 360 Method - A Homeschool Coffee Break Review

Guitar 360 Method - A Homeschool Coffee Break Review for the Homeschool Review Crew on Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

Piano Tuning and Technology - This is her technology credit and is essentially on the job training, or a sort of apprenticeship. Kennady works part time at the music shop where her guitar teacher is a piano technician, and they've started training her to work on pianos - repairs and rebuilds of the action and insides of pianos. How cool is that?!

Now I'm looking at the time and realizing that I'd better go get ready for the History class and later today I'll finish writing up her report card to submit!

How did your first semester go? According to plan, or are you making adjustments? Leave a comment and let me know!

What Curriculum Are You Using in Your Homeschool?

What Curriculum Are You Using in Your Homeschool? - 5 Days of Homeschool Encouragement for Back to School 2018-2019 Blog Hop - Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

Pretty sure the number one question homeschoolers ask each other is this one:

What Curriculum Are You Using in Your Homeschool?

We all want to know what everyone else is using! Sometimes because we're looking to make a change, or planning ahead. Sometimes to make a connection with another homeschool family using the same books. But a lot of times, it's purely out of curiosity! Well, today is Take a Look Tuesday - the perfect opportunity to take a look at what we've chosen for the upcoming school year!

Grammar and Composition

We really liked the non-fiction writing course from Writing with Sharon Watson that we did in co-op last year, and although a couple of mom asked me about teaching it again, I knew Kennady wanted something different. She really wanted to do something with creative writing. So we decided to do Writing Fiction [in High School]: Bringing Your Stories to Life! which is also by Sharon Watson. I'll be teaching this course at the co-op, which will be another stretch for me. Not just teaching, but teaching fiction writing. But I'm looking forward to it - it looks like a very entertaining course!

Math

Ah yes, the favorite subject of exactly none of my kids! Never fear, this should be a fairly easy course, after Kennady worked so long to get through Algebra! She does need one more math credit, and needless to say, she has not requested Trig or Pre-Calculus.  But seriously, I do require my kids to do a Consumer Math course during high school, so she'll be doing a combination of Money 101: Seminars in Personal Finances from SchoolhouseTeachers.com and Consumer Math for Christian Schools from BJU Press. I picked up the BJU Press book second-hand and it's a full credit, but it's a few years old and it's a textbook. Textbook means reading, and heaven knows she's got enough on her plate this year. Money 101 is only a half credit, but it's media based and more up to date. So I'm working on picking from both resources to come up with a practical course that will satisfy the credit requirement without weighing her down with too much busywork in an already very full year.

Start an Ultimate Membership by August 31, 2018, for only $139/year and receive a second year FREE! Plus other goodies too. So now is a good time to check that out!)

History, Bible, and Literature

History courses from Notgrass have been a staple in our homeschool for many years, so I was planning for Kennady to complete her required American History credit this year by studying Exploring America. Then the lady that was going to teach this at co-op had to withdraw, and we were looking for another instructor. I figured since Kennady was doing this anyway, I might as well teach it and she could do it through the co-op. And if a couple other students were taking it too, it might be more enjoyable for her, and we'd have a bit more motivation to stick to the deadlines and get done. Plus I'd earn a few dollars in tuition. So that's what we're doing. It will be a full History and full Bible credit, but we'll wait until classes start before making final decisions on how much of the Lit part of the course we'll do.

What Curriculum Are You Using in Your Homeschool? - 5 Days of Homeschool Encouragement for Back to School 2018-2019 Blog Hop - Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

Electives - Co-ops and Classes

French II - Kennady will continue with the French instructor from last year at the co-op, as will two of her classmates. They are carrying on with the rest of the textbook French I for Christian Schools from BJU Press, and the instructor adds in other reading and activities. This will be another full credit.

What Curriculum Are You Using in Your Homeschool? - 5 Days of Homeschool Encouragement for Back to School 2018-2019 Blog Hop - Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

Speech and Presentation II - This class is also a continuation of the course she did last year at co-op, and is worth a half credit. This may have been her favorite class from last year, and she was really looking forward to another round!

What Curriculum Are You Using in Your Homeschool? - 5 Days of Homeschool Encouragement for Back to School 2018-2019 Blog Hop - Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

Children's Chorus -  This is Kennady's final year in this upper level chorus. It's an excellent program that provides outstanding music education in choral singing, and she really enjoys it. It's a full Fine Arts credit. Like she needs more of those! But music is her passion, and the direction for her future career, so it's all good!

Guitar Lessons - I'm kind of assuming that Kennady will want to take guitar lessons again this coming year, although it will be a challenge to make time. But as I said, this is her passion and her career choice. Regardless of whether she takes lessons, she will continue playing on worship teams and she is also likely to start taking her own students in ukulele and guitar.

Piano Tuning and Technology - This will be the required technology credit that we have been trying to figure out. Kennady has been working part time at the music shop where her guitar teacher is a piano technician, and they've had her start working on pianos occasionally. Just a couple weeks ago, they asked her to consider allowing them to train her in piano repair and technology work, as long as she could commit to staying on and working for them for at least a certain time once she was trained. In a way it was a surprise how excited she was about the opportunity, but she really does like working on the pianos. Since they are also willing to help her get started teaching guitar and ukulele, it seems like a great fit for her! We're still working out details but I think it's safe to say this is a go! (And this is something she can do because she's homeschooled, and has the opportunity and flexibility to make it happen!)
