Welcome to Homeschool Highlights!
This weekly link-up is your opportunity to share some highlights of what is happening in your homeschool and in your world each week. If you write a wrap-up post at the end of each week, like I've been doing, we'd love to see what you're busy with from week to week. If you'd like to pick a favorite post from your week that spotlights a resource or activity in your homeschool that you'd like to tell others about, we're interested in those too. I'm keeping the guidelines as simple as I can, and they will appear at the bottom of each post, along with the link tool. I look forward to getting to know you, and I hope this will be a source of encouragement and good ideas for all of us.
Homeschool news . . . Okay, well, I'm not going to pretend we did school this week. Not really. Maybe a little bit of reading and stuff, but with all the birthday celebrations and everything else, it was essentially a vacation week. I'm hoping she's working on some literature and history today, but we'll find out when I get home later.
Homeschool thoughts . . . There are some rolling around in my head though. It's about time I get serious about lesson planning for the coming year, especially since I'll be teaching a High School Composition class at our co-op. On my to-do list for today or tomorrow is inquiring about an internship for Kennady with the Children's Chorus.
Other news . . . So I said it was birthday week, and it certainly was. We started with Canada Day on Saturday, July 1st. (See my post Canada Day 2016 for background.) Canada celebrated 150 years, in case you weren't aware, so it was a big deal! It was a big deal for us here too, and we planned a dinner that featured "Canadian" food and celebrated with friends. I've been joking that Canadian food isn't much different from "American" food, except it has more maple syrup, so coming up with a menu was fun. Poutine, obviously. Dessert was also easy - butter tarts and Nanaimo Bars (Recipes for the curious can be found on my blog: Eating the Americas: Poutine; Eating the Americas: Butter Tart Bars; and Eating the Americas: Nanaimo Bars. I'll plan on sharing an updated recipe for Butter Tarts soon!) We finally settled on smoked salmon and maple glazed carrots to round out the main course.
We didn't have a birthday to celebrate on Sunday, but the guys got home from Creation, and Kennady and I went to meet a friend of mine and her family for lunch, so it was a celebratory day anyway.
Monday was another birthday celebration, this one for Kennady's Sweet Sixteen. She wanted to go to a Frederick Keys game, which was a pretty easy request to grant.

I think we rock the silver hair, personally. |

We had great seats for the game, but had to watch the home team lose. There was a fireworks show afterwards, which kind of made up for it. |
And she had a good time, which is all that matters, of course. Photo credit: KAT, used with permission |
Obviously, Tuesday was Independence Day so everyone had the day off. We had a family cookout before heading into town for fireworks in the evening.
The rest of the week has been more or less back to normal. Although this week's adventures included another vehicle breakdown, which was not that much fun. If anyone wants to gift us all new vehicles, I'll have no objection.
What I Loved This Week . . . fireworks!

On my blogs last week . . .
And on my book blog, Just A Second:
Just A Second is where I share book reviews and other book-related things, and update on what's on my bookshelf. This week I finished and reviewed With You Always (Orphan Train) by Jody Hedlund, and I've been reading:
The Black Moth by Georgette Heyer
Barbara and Susan's Guide to the Empty Nest by Barbara Rainey and Susan Yates
The Red Siren by MaryLu Tyndall
A parting shot . . . It's not easy to see in these pictures, but we noticed that a large number of vultures were taking advantage of a sunny day and the updrafts. We counted more than 20. At first we wondered what herd of animals was nearing its demise locally, but it appeared the birds were just enjoying a little soaring time. ;-)

Happy Birthday to your Kennady! 16 is a wonderful age to be - I hope hers is filled with adventure and fun!
Sweet 16; how fun! We spent a good 4 days celebrating independence day and since we live on the lake we had fireworks going off just about every night to enjoy.
'twas a good week you had. :)

Happy birthday Kennady!
And really, the U.S. needs to adopt poutine. I first learned about it this spring, when one of my children was studying Canada. YUM!!
