We Can Definitely Handle Handel!

This week we are studying Georg Frideric Handel and we are definitely on familiar ground with his music!

We listened to Water Music Suite, Suite from Alcina, Music for the Royal Fireworks, and selections from Messiah.  After doing the notes, timeline and mapwork in Young Scholar, we also read the book Handel - Who Knew What He Liked, which was humourous and interesting.  We wound up having quite a discussion on the possible scenarios that led to the tradition of standing for the Hallelujah Chorus.  Did King George stand because he liked the music so much, or because his royal bottom was getting tired of sitting for so long?  The king standing explains one time, but how did it become standard practice to stand every time?  We may need to do some more research.   In any case, Handel and his music wins our approval, and a standing ovation every time.  The community choir I sing with ends every Christmas concert with the Hallelujah Chorus, and for me it is a moving experience to sing it, to hear it, and to see the response of an audience.

And before I start weeping with emotion...

I just love that.  LOL

And here it is late afternoon on Thursday, and we have yet to do Kennady's piano lesson...

This post is linked at ~a teaching heart~ where we are keeping each other accountable for making time for music in our homeschooling!
