Somehow I doubt I'm the only person who is writing about field trips. For most homeschoolers I know, the extra flexibility we have in taking creative field trips and scheduling them the way it works for us is a huge benefit. We are blessed to live in an area with tons of field trip opportunities, especially those that relate to American History (we're close to Washington DC and to Gettysburg), and we've found some great opportunities while on vacation too. I love being able to add a 'schoolday' while we're on vacation, just because we've spent some time doing something fun and tourist-y that was also educational!
Here are just a few of the interesting field trips we've done:
Hope Acres dairy farm - see the entire blog entry with all the pictures here.
Sadly, Hope Acres closed a couple years ago.
A trip to DC for the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, when my home province of
Alberta was featured. My blog entry is here.
An encampment weekend at Camp Flintlock near Historic
St Mary's City in Maryland - one of the very best trips ever!!
I talked about it in this blog entry.
Philadelphia - we visited the Franklin Institute and saw the
King Tut exhibit, and toured the Independence Hall area.
King Tut exhibit, and toured the Independence Hall area.
We used to live in southern NJ, so we have visited Philly
a few times. The blog entry about this trip is here.
A visit to my family in Alberta resulted in a field trip to
Banff National Park. See more here - and here.
A truly impromptu field trip to the Zamboni plant!
Historic St Mary's City on Homeschool Day (we've done this
a couple times - great field trip!) See my blog entry here.
Vacation to Florida have allowed us to do field trips to:
the Colonial Spanish Quarter in St Augustine,
One of our visits to upstate New York took us to the
Our trip to Cedar Point near Cleveland also afforded us a visit to
Kennady was inspired by a tour of a bakery where the kids got to
try their hand and decorating with icing.
A family favorite is the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
Some local trips to historical sites have included Mount Vernon
and numerous trips to the Smithsonian Museums and civil war sites.
We've also visited the local newspaper to see how it's put together, a TV and radio station in Baltimore, many museums and state parks and national parks, and more that I can't even think of right now!
What are some of your favorite field trips? I'd love some new ideas!

It almost seems like cheating when we call something this fun school, doesn't it? We just came back from a field trip today where they were catching songbirds to measure and band them before releasing them again.
Neat trips! Your home province is right next door to me! :D
