Homeschool Mother's Journal: Summer Days Edition

Sometimes I'm a little slow to catch on. This is one of those occasions. Somehow I missed the fact that The Homeschool Mother's Journal has a new home. It's now hosted by "So You Call Yourself a Homeschooler". Find out more about this weekly link-up here.

In our homeschool... We started our summer break about a month ago, around Memorial Day, but that doesn't mean there's no schoolwork to do! There are a few loose ends from the school year that we've been working on - writing assignments that needed a final edit before printing, a workbook that was so close to being complete that we might as well do it, a project that we'd been unable to do earlier because of weather. Spencer had several of the hands-on projects left to complete for his Auto Upkeep course, and I allowed those to wait until summer break even though he's already received the credit and graduated.

Other than that, we have things to work on for the Schoolhouse Review Crew! Yes, it's hard to convince the kids that we need to work on these things when they really just want to sleep in or play video games or hang out with their friends. And I haven't been a slave driver by any means. Thankfully, the resources we're reviewing right now are pretty fun and flexible. We are working on the Student Writing Intensive from Institute for Excellence in Writing; Biology from Science for High School; Dig-It Games; and the Homeschool Programming KidCoder Web Series.

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share... a break between one school year and the next, whenever you take it, is a great time to consider a mission statement or focus for the coming year. Before our homeschool is officially in session again, I will be choosing a Bible verse to be our School Year Scripture for 2013-2014. (I shared some past years' Scriptures in "M is for Mission Statement")

In other news... some highlights from the past several weeks, since it's been that long since I did an HMJ post: Kennady's softball team had playoff games, and ultimately won their division championship; we've attended a couple of graduation parties; we've had friends over to enjoy meals with us; Kennady auditioned for, and was accepted into the Childrens Chorus; and Harrison bought himself a car!

Just this week, Kennady started piano and guitar lessons for the summer. We don't think we will have time to continue lessons in the fall, at least not both instruments, but we'll see what happens. And last night, we had Spencer's graduation party and it turned out great.

One of my favorite things this week... There have been a lot of very cool things over the past several weeks, and Harrison getting himself a car was something that turned out to be awesome for me as well as for him! But my favorite thing was booking our vacation for the fall - we will be able to visit my parents in Alberta when they celebrate their 50th anniversary! My wonderful, thoughtful hubby found a great seat sale which got us a manageable price on flying five of us out there so we jumped on the chance.

Things I'm working on... Lesson planning for the coming school year, reading and studying, and trying to get some of the neglected housework caught up.

A photo to share... a few photos, actually. I took these the day we had a major thunderstorm here. That's  rain and hail in the pictures, although it looks like snow. Speaking of storms - please pray for the people of Calgary, Alberta and the surrounding areas that have been pretty hard hit with flooding this week. Flooding is just not part of the "normal" there like it is here. The damage to property and businesses will be huge, I'm sure, as many towns and neighborhoods are underwater, including most of downtown Calgary.
