How Do You Do Phys.Ed.?

How Do You Do Phys.Ed.? - Part of the How Do You Homeschool series on Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

No matter how long we've been homeschooling, we are curious about how other homeschoolers do things. And homeschoolers who are newer to the game obviously have lots of questions! This series will try to answers some of the questions homeschoolers ask each other. Questions about how we handle some of the little details and about our opinions on different aspects of homeschooling. Questions that we all might answer differently because what works great in one family might not work at all in another.

How do you do Phys.Ed.?

This can be a practical concern. We know it's good for kids' health for them to stay active, and if they want to play sports, we'd like to give them that opportunity. And in many places there's a grad requirement of at least one Phys.Ed. credit during high school. So how do homeschoolers make it happen when they don't have a school gymnasium and twenty other kids in the class?

There are plenty of opportunities out there for kids to participate in sports, and homeschoolers can usually find the options that work for their families. And like so many other "how do you homeschool" questions, this one has many possible answers! Here's how we've done Phys.Ed. over the years.

In our school district, homeschooled students may not participate in high school team sports. I've heard that in other school districts, that may be different. There are now some teams in different sports that are made up of primarily homeschooled students. My kids have played team sports, but we chose community based teams. All three of my boys played community league baseball for five to nine years or so. My daughter played community softball for nine years. We also have had volleyball, hockey, lacrosse, and soccer teams that the kids could have played on. We probably would have been even more open to sports if we didn't live so far away from everything! But regardless, that counted as Phys.Ed. Kids that play team sports during their high school years can definitely count that towards their Phys.Ed. credit.

The biggest contributor to my kids' Phys.Ed. grades on their report card, and their Phys.Ed. credits in high school was the co-op style gym class our homeschool fellowship group has operated. One day a week, we rented space at an indoor sports facility, and our kids could play football, soccer, basketball, badminton, volleyball, field hockey, and many other sports and wide games in appropriate age groupings. In fact, this gym class was the highlight of my kids' week for many years! Even when they weren't crazy about whatever sport they were currently playing, they loved getting together with their friends.

The homeschool group also had a Field Day in the spring, and we tried to participate in that. Track and field events, perhaps a soccer game, and a tug-of-war with the parents were featured events.

behind the boys that took the top three spots!

Other sports opportunities that were part of our Phys.Ed. classes included archery classes, basketball tournaments, bowling, paintball tournaments, and weekly gym nights hosted by our church. Landon was a member of Civil Air Patrol during his high school years, and the physical training and activities were counted in his Phys.Ed. credit as well.

How Do You Do Phys.Ed.? - Part of the How Do You Homeschool series on Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

Before the kids were high school age, I just gave them a grade on their report card for Phys.Ed. and didn't worry too much about how much time they were spending. They were active and had engaged in physical activities and sports, so they got an A! During the high school years, when the grade was for a credit, we based the credit on hours. So I calculated the hours they were in the gym class, and had them log the time they spent at paintball or football or gym nights. None of my kids had any trouble at all coming up with enough hours to equal at least a half credit during each year of high school, and that was without playing organized sports!

52 Lists - Sports I Like to Watch

52 Lists - Sports I Like to Watch on Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

This week we're making lists of sports we like to watch or play and linking up at 52 Lists at Chasing Slow. And honestly, I don't much care for playing sports, but I do like watching some.

Sports I like to watch include:
  1. Hockey! I grew up in Calgary, so I've been a Flames fan all along. My other favorite teams are the St. Louis Blues (just because? I don't know.) and the Washington Capitals (because they're the most local team for us now. My hubby's favorite team is the Montreal Canadiens, and that's actually how Kennady got her name. True story. She is Kennady Anne - try it with the French accent and you'll get it. We mostly watch NHL hockey on TV, but occasionally we get up to Hershey to see the AHL team, the Bears. My hubby still plays hockey, but I don't get to watch his games that often. Their league is mostly for fun, but they hold a couple of tournaments and events each year, and I try to get to those.  (See more at H is for Hockey)
  2. Baseball. I watched a lot of baseball in the years when my boys played in the community leagues. I enjoy going to MLB and minor league games, and in fact our summer vacation coming up will take us to three major league parks and we're pretty excited about it. I sometimes watch televised games, but mostly during the playoffs and World Series. My favorite team is the Toronto Blue Jays. Locally we have the Baltimore Orioles, and one of their farm teams, the Frederick Keys. (See more at B is for Baseball (History Lesson))
  3. Softball. Which I don't watch that much any more, but I sure loved it when my daughter was playing! (See more at S is for Softball)
  4. Olympics, especially the Winter Games. Clearly, the favorite event for me is hockey, but I also enjoy figure skating (even though I think it's mostly fixed!), skiing, bobsled and curling. In 1988, we still lived in Calgary when they hosted the Winter Games, and attended some Olympic hockey games! (I was even in the choir that sang in the Opening Ceremonies - see more at My Favorite Olympic Winter Games I spend less time watching the Summer Games, but I try to catch some of the gymnastics, swimming, diving, track events, and rowing. And just whatever happens to be on.

Middle School Monday - Midterm

This post may contain affiliate links - using affiliate links from Homeschool Coffee Break helps fuel this blog and our homeschool - thank you!
Middle School Monday

Welcome to Middle School Monday! We've just passed the midway point (officially, anyway) of our school year, and I've done a first semester report card, so I thought it might be appropriate to take stock of how things are going so far.

Report cards are an odd thing for homeschoolers sometimes. I mean, if my kid doesn't understand something, we will just keep working on it or figure out another way to learn it until they master it. So generally speaking, the grades are going to be pretty good on the report card. And the grades shouldn't ever come as a surprise, since I'm the one assigning them. Still, for some reason, my kids have always kind of liked getting report cards, and having grades submitted every quarter (or every semester, for high school students) is how our umbrella group chooses to keep track that members are following the state law for home education.
Hewitt Homeschooling Review
Language Arts - Kennady enjoys reading, and her reading and comprehension skills are above grade level. She is doing very well with Lightning Literature and Composition, understanding the grammar and literature analysis portions of the study, and doing a great job with most of the composition assignments. Her spelling is generally very good, but she often doesn't bother organizing her writing into good paragraphs. Her errors in punctuation and grammar are usually because she is working quickly and gets ahead of herself, leaving things out. More editing practice will help.

Overall, Kennady and I are both very happy with Lightning Lit & Comp. We fell behind schedule a little bit during December, but should be on track to finishing the book by the end of the school year, so not much adjustment is needed.

Math - This is the subject Kennady struggles with the most, so she is moving much more slowly than I would like through the Life of Fred books this year. But on the plus side, she sticks with it until she understands. I did want her to finish both Pre-Algebra books by the end of the school year, and I think that will be a real stretch. She will need to make sure she works on it every day, and then I think it's still quite doable.

Life of Fred remains our math curriculum of choice, but in order to finish Pre-Algebra "on time" she will need to step up the pace!
Middle School Monday: Geography Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com
Geography - Cultural Geography has been quite a bit of fun so far, but we took a longer break than we should have over the holidays. I wondered whether I'd set a too ambitious pace at the beginning of the year, but it turned out to be just about right, so I'm confident that as we get back into this routine, Kennady will catch up again, and stay on track through the rest of the year. For the most part, she is enjoying this study, and making the most of it.

Science- This is another course that has suffered from a much-too-long holiday hiatus. But we move through the lessons much more quickly than I anticipated when I made up the assignment schedule at the beginning of the school year, so I'm not worried at all about finishing by the end of the year. The most challenging part of this is remembering to keep track of daily weather observations, because there are several projects like that, and we keep forgetting and needing to start over!

Our homeschool group is doing a Science Fair this spring, and we've never been able to attend before. I'm wondering if I should plan on it this year, and use the preparation of a display as extra motivation.
Virtual Curriculum Fair - Art and Music @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com
Art - some of Kennady's art projects have been from the cultural geography course, and many have been things she chose to do on her own, or lessons pulled from one of the ARTistic Pursuits books in our collection. This is a subject I never have to nag her to do - more often I have to tell her to remember that she has other subjects that need her attention too.
Virtual Curriculum Fair - Art and Music @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com
Music - I rely on piano lessons, guitar lessons, and children's chorus to supply music instruction and practice, and she gets a lot! Again, I never have to remind her to practice!

Phys.Ed. - we have just started gym classes for spring semester, so this is another "easy credit" class. However, it looks like we will have to pass on softball for this season, because the practices and games will be on a night that she isn't available. That's not a final decision yet, but I can't see spending the money for registration and committing to a team if she can only make about half the games.

It was tempting to despair when I realized we were at the halfway point of the school year, because it felt like we were WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY behind and would really have to scramble to catch up. Once I broke it down by subject, the situation really isn't that bleak at all. We shouldn't have trouble getting things back up to speed in Language Arts, Geography, or Science; so it's really only Math that will prove a challenge. One thing that will really help is to get Kennady back in the habit of using her My Student Logbook to keep track of her daily work.

Have you reached a midway point in your school year? Do you need to make any adjustments? Leave a comment and let me know!

Homeschool Weekly/Middle School Monday Combined

Middle School Monday

Welcome to Middle School Monday! This was another weekend that got away from me with some unexpected events, and just being busy, so I decided to combine my Homeschool Weekly post with Middle School Monday.

In our homeschool...  I let Kennady take a week long break from Science - what was I thinking? No, seriously, she was a week ahead of schedule with Science anyway, and since she's been dragging a little bit with Treasure Island in Literature, I figured it would work out for the best. Of course, I still have to check how much progress she made on the book, if she's caught up to where we wanted to be. Pretty sure she's very close anyway.

She worked on her own in Math and in Geography this week. Or mostly on her own in Geography. I get to peek over her shoulder and see what she's doing quite often, and we prefer to do the chapter review questions from her textbook orally. This week she learned about Albania and Montenegro, and we finally got some cooking and baking done that was inspired by a couple of the countries she has studied so far. We had Chicken and Feta Pie for dinner one night (Greece); Chicken Paprika on another night (Hungary); and baked shortbread, Chelsea buns, and Cream Scones during the week (Great Britain). I'm going to try and remember to share recipes at some point this week!

Landon kept at History and Algebra for the most part this week.

Tuesday wound up being almost a whole day off school. Kennady's music lesson in  the morning was cancelled, which turned out to be convenient for us because it was also yearbook picture day. So we were able to get their pictures done for the yearbook, go out for lunch, and then head for gym class in the afternoon.

In other news... Kennady had a friend come for a  sleepover on the weekend, and Landon spent the weekend at his friend's place, so that worked out nicely. Kennady also had an extra choir practice on Saturday afternoon, and played softball on Sunday afternoon.
I mentioned the "unexpected events" of the weekend... yeah, you could say it was pretty unexpected that I had vehicle trouble AGAIN. Unexpected, and very frustrating and annoying. I was on my way to pick up Landon and his friend late Saturday evening when the van overheated and I had to pull over and call for help. The friend's dad had to go pick the boys up, and I had to have my DH come to my rescue, and we had to get the van towed to our mechanic. DH told the mechanic he should maybe have a special parking spot labeled just for us. *sigh* Well, I'm hoping the mechanic will call with relatively good news this morning - praying that it's just a hose or something smallish that needs to be fixed, and not something terribly expensive. And we are thinking we should probably get shopping for a different vehicle.

There was an event at the winery just down the road from us this weekend, and that brought a happier unexpected event to our weekend - fireworks on Saturday evening! We did get to enjoy that before I went on my ill-fated trip. LOL

I recommend... checking out the podcast or transcript of a couple episodes of Focus on the Family's radio show. Links to these showed up in my email this week, and I'm glad I took the time to read the transcripts of this interview with Cynthia Tobias. There are valuable insights into what is going on with middle schoolers and how to handle some of the parenting issues with them. Cynthias Tobias has a new book out - Middle School: The Inside Story - that looks interesting. Even though it's most likely geared towards parents who send their kids to school outside of the home, the developmental and emotional issues are basically the same, so it might be worth checking out! Here are the links to the podcast/transcripts: "Helping Kids Thrive in the Middle School Years: Part One" and "Part Two".

Random 5 on Friday: Late in the Evening

The Pebble Pond

I'm late with my Random 5 on Friday.  Funny how that happens when everybody in the household wants a turn at the computer, and then we are all headed different directions for the evening! And even though the night is still relatively young, I am more tired than I ought to be. I'm gonna post this and then brew myself a cup of coffee!
  1. I had a moment of panic early in the week where I thought our first quarter grades were due! I couldn't figure out how it had gone so quickly... and then I took a deep breath and actually looked at my calendar. They are not due till the first week of November. Whew!!
  2. I absolutely hate the header image I made for one of my reviews, but it's already posted. And I don't know whether I should just leave it, or whether I should make myself do another one.
  3. We are getting a new roof next week! The materials were delivered today.
  4. We celebrated the oldest two boys' birthdays last night with dinner out at a barbecue place. And then went shopping at Ollie's, cuz we're just that classy!
  5. Just got word that Kennady's softball game for this weekend was cancelled because of the unexpected passing of a coach connected to the other team. A man that had many friends among the other softball coaches as well. So sad for this loss, and for the families and friends that are grieving. I don't know this man at all, but I hope he knew Jesus.

Homeschool Weekly: Middle School Monday Edition

Middle School Monday

Welcome to Middle School Monday! This weekend was crazy and I never got a chance to post my weekly summary, so I am combining it with Middle School Monday. Most of the schoolwork that got done was from my middle schooler anyway.

In our homeschool... Kennady worked on a little bit of everything last week, and mostly on her own.

Her Geography study shifted to the Visits in Europe book, and she started looking at the first country on the list - the United Kingdom. Although the focus is on England for now, I thought it timely as Scotland just held its vote regarding independence. Kennady didn't follow that news on her own, but it's something we'll be discussing a little this week.
In English, she is reading Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson right now.

Math, with Life of Fred, has been going very well, and I'm happy to report that there are still no complaints from her about having to do math, and she's understanding the material for the most part.

I was a bit surprised at how much she was interested in the simple activity suggested in her Science book this week. As part of the study about the Flood and geology (background to her study of weather and climate), she made a "flood in a jar" - soil, sand, small rocks, and some twigs and leaves in a mason jar, along with water. It was sealed and shaken up, then allowed to sit so that all the contents could settle, and we observed how it settled into layers.

In other news... softball practices were cancelled this week because many of the girls - and then the coach - were sick! Not Kennady though, thankfully. They played yesterday and won; and Kennady had a pretty good game personally.

The hubster and I made a quick trip out of town Friday and Saturday, so Kennady stayed at a friend's and got to go to a local Christian music festival. That was very exciting for her!

One of my favorite things this week... was having Kennady sing with our worship team at church again.

I recommend... checking out The Schoolhouse Review Crew blog, in particular the reviews posted for My Student Logbook, which we found to be a great tool in our homeschool. I think it's especially good for middle schoolers, because it helps them learn to manage their own time and gets them in the habit of keeping the kind of logbook and records that will make high school transcripts easy.
My Student Logbook review

On my blog this week...

A parting shot... So Kennady has this mini-safe, and last week she decided to update it by painting it and decorating it with a few of her favorite things - Agents of SHIELD and Lord of the Rings. LOL
