Introducing Middle School Monday!

Middle School Monday

I know today is Tuesday, but we've just got back from vacation and since I'm still playing catch-up, this didn't get done yesterday as I'd planned! Not the way I'd wanted to get my Monday link-up started. Oh well. I figured I'd better get going with it anyway!

Here's the deal: I've noticed that there are lots of link-ups and places to share pre-school and early elementary homeschool posts, and a growing number of link-ups for sharing posts related to homeschooling through high school. But not so many dedicated to the middle school years. My plan is to post something each Monday about what my middle schooler is doing, and I would love to have others share their middle school related posts here as well. The link will stay open from Monday through Friday, and I will do my best to visit, comment, and share your posts.

Monday - yesterday - was the start of our "full schedule" school. In August, we got started in Geography and Math. Yesterday, we got a few more subjects going as well - Science and Language Arts. Today Kennady is back to music lessons, gym class, and choir, so we are on our way! There will also be Art and Bible, and who knows what else as we go along!

We started a new page in Kennady's "My Student Logbook" (review coming later this week!) to include the subjects we are adding.

For Social Studies, we are combining two resources to study the cultural geography of Europe - Kennady was pretty specific when I asked her what she wanted to do for Social Studies this year, and using these two books together seemed like the best way to accomplish that. We are starting with the Bob Jones text Cultural Geography. The opening chapters focus on cartography; weather and climate; and the main features of the earth's land, water, and atmosphere. After these foundational chapters, we will focus on the continent of Europe and we'll also be using Visits in Europe from Simply Charlotte Mason.

You can see how Kennady has let her obsession with Lord of the Rings influence the way she writes in her workbooks (geography above and math below)!

For Science, Kennady has chosen to study meteorology this year. We'll mostly be using this book from Answers in Genesis: God's Design for Heaven and Earth - Our Weather and Water.

We got started yesterday, and even did a fun demonstration to prove that the physical laws of the earth are reliable, in this case, the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

What are you doing with your middle schooler? Leave a comment and let me know, and link up your middle school posts here this week! Please grab the Middle School Monday button to add to your post or to your sidebar too. I look forward to seeing what others are doing!

Looking forward to this link-up. I have a 5th and 7th grader this year and I love checking out what others of similar ages are doing. Thank you for hosting.

I love comments! It's like visiting over a virtual cup of coffee.
