In our homeschool . . .  we were on break! At least most of the time. Landon was working all week anyway, and Kennady spent a day at her friend's, plus we were just busy this week. And it's not like we haven't earned the chance to take a week off, right?! Kennady did a little bit of work in Geography, and we spent some time on The Scarlet Pimpernel study from Progeny Press, but that's about it. I did work on some lesson planning for finishing up the last of the schoolwork and preparing for our start on The Power in Your Hands, which we will be reviewing later in the summer.

We're looking forward to receiving Beric the Briton from Heirloom Audio Productions soon so we can get working on that review.

In other news . . . we got ourselves a couple of kittens! Friends from church had let us know that they had kittens in their barn that were ready for new homes. We also wanted to buy some sausage from them, so on Friday evening, Kennady and the hubster and I went for a drive and came home with a cooler full of sausage and two new kittens. We have named them Aurora and Merida, and they are settling in very nicely. It's fascinating to see the different personalities they have, and the cuteness level is Off.The.Charts!!

This is Aurora. As you can see, she is completely at ease in
her new home, and can sleep just about anywhere.
And yes, that's how we decided on the name.

This is Merida. She is smaller, and much more wary. She is
also daintier and more gentle in her play. She's not as willing
to snuggle, but still likes to follow me around and stay close.
She's not as wild and rebellious as her Disney namesake though.

This is our new normal and their favorite play activity. It consists of knocking as many books, papers, clothes, and anything else onto the floor as possible, and then wrassling or chewing on the cardboard boxes.

We were very busy last weekend between our various jobs and a few parties. 'Tis the season for grad parties and many other cookouts and occasions as well!

During the week, Landon was working, and I had some reviews and other appointments. Several of the moms from our homeschool group will be meeting for prayer and Bible study during the summer, and we had our first meeting this week.

Today Kennady is starting her summer job. She is doing some summer child care. Not babysitting, really, since the two boys are school age! They're not old enough to be by themselves while mom and dad are at work though, and mom couldn't give up her job for the summer. Most days they will be at our house, so Kennady will be taking responsibility but I will still be here to make sure nothing gets out of hand! Today is sort of a trial run, as the boys will be at camp next week, and then we start for real the following week. So I guess every member of our family has a job of some kind now!

What I'm learning . . . I'm trying to learn a bit more about wine so I'll feel more confident at my new job at the winery tasting room.

I recommend . . . The Homeschool Post. Yes, it's time for me to do a little self-promotion again. My latest article on the Post is about the Four Benefits of Summer Homeschooling. And there are lots of other great articles on the Post, as well as the Blog and Tell link-up.

On my blog last week . . .

On the bookshelf . . .

Dawn at Emberwilde (A Treasures of Surrey Novel)by Sarah E. Ladd
The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy
Lady of Ashes by Christine Trent
My Mother's Quilts: Devotions from a Legacy of Needlework by Ramona Richards

You can find reviews and other book-related things on my book blog, Just A Second. In fact, this week I posted a review of My Mother's Quilts and it includes a link to a drawing for one of the quilts featured in the book. You can enter from my post on the blog, or by clicking the image below.

A parting shot . . . something that's NOT kittens! I received this picture that one of the senior members took when Landon received his Billy Mitchell Award. It's pretty rare that I'm in a picture at all, never mind a picture that I feel okay about sharing, and in this one I'm justifiably proud of my son!

Good morning Kym,

My son has been using Power in Your Hands this year. He's been working independently (16) and hasn't complained. That's a relief. ~smile~ I look forward to your review.

Your kittens are so very adorable! You've reminded me of a 10th tip, get two! It makes life so much easier when they can play with each other. They don't make as much trouble. ~smile~ I'm so glad the socializing kittens article was perfect timing for you. I enjoy my full grown yellow tabby, a lazy cuddle toy, but I enjoy the playfulness and cuteness of kittens. Enjoy!

This summer is going to be filled to the brim for my teens with summer jobs, an internship for my elder daughter, job shadowing for my younger daughter, a little Power in Your Hands for my son, reading, time in the creek and maybe a little math.

I was on the Schoolhouse review crew for a couple of years. I think I might like to get involved again. I'd love to know when they open for new applications.

Please drop by and say hello!

Thanks, everyone, for stopping by and admiring our kittens and for your kind comments!

Laura - I remember you from the Crew, and will try to remember to let you know when the Crew opens applications again. Glad your son has been doing well with Power in Your Hands. I've heard some great things about it and we're looking forward to getting into it.
