From the High School Lesson Book - Establishing the Routine on Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com - a new school year means it's time to figure out how we'll organize our days

I think most everyone is back to school by now, but there a few people who wait until after Labour Day, and this year we're in that group. With a vacation right at the end of August, it just made sense to wait until after the last long weekend of summer to really hit the books. So tomorrow is the big day, and we're going to do our best to settle into a good rhythm and routine as quickly as possible.

For our homeschool, having a routine rather than a schedule has always worked better. We've tried keeping a schedule, with specified time slots for certain subjects or activities, but it created more stress than it relieved. So instead of carving out detailed time slots for each subject, we plug the few things into the agenda that do have a specific time, and then loosely plan the rest of the days around those.

This year I have only one student, and she can work independently, but it doesn't look like my routines will change very much from last year. We'll still have gym class on Tuesday afternoon and choir on Tuesday evening, and she will still be taking guitar lessons. Those are the three weekly appointments that we need to work around. Since Kennady doesn't need me to actively teach any of her subjects, she really can decide for herself how she'll manage her time with schoolwork. Of course there will be due dates for assignments, and we will work together to find a reasonable pace.

I will be expecting her to work on Algebra and History every day. For the most part the other subjects she has can be more flexible. We plan to start our schoolday at 9am each day. That gives me some time to have my coffee and time to myself before school starts. One change we're making this year is having both desks in my room cleared so that we can both have a workspace here. I'm not sure yet how often we'll be making use of that, but it's an option that I've often wished I'd used in the past! I think it will be a benefit to both of us - I'll be available to answer any questions right away, and I'll be able to keep the grading up to date. Sharing the computer will be easier too, I think.

We are also more of routine people than schedule people. My oldest is in 8th grade, and she is independent with her school work, too. Can't wait until next year when I can join the link up!

My homeschool days are crazy because of I work outside the home. I have my son's subjects scheduled out in Homeschool Plant nearly for the entire year. I was trying to give him just a 4 day week, but we have too much to do. He will do Grammar/Writing daily. Other than that:

Math - Weds, Thurs, Fri
Science - Tues, Thurs
History - Weds, Fri
Bible - Tues, Fri

Changes in our homeschool this year too - only 2 instead of 3 and my oldest is pretty much independent as well. Tues and Thurs are our work around days during basketball season so routine really works best for us too.

I am working to encourage more independence in my lad this year, our Astronomy course is helping with that... and I'll be adding history to that later in the year.

We have always been pretty flexible. This year, though, we have planned it out more and working with a more detailed schedule. It is working well because each of the girls had input with the plan. - Lori
