Homeschool Highlights - The Week It Really Felt Like Winter

This post contains affiliate links - using affiliate links from Homeschool Coffee Break helps fuel this blog and our homeschool - thank you!

Welcome to Homeschool Highlights!
This weekly link-up is your opportunity to share some highlights of what is happening in your homeschool and in your world each week. If you write a wrap-up post at the end of each week, like I've been doing, we'd love to see what you're busy with from week to week. If you'd like to pick a favorite post from your week that spotlights a resource or activity in your homeschool that you'd like to tell others about, we're interested in those too. I'm keeping the guidelines as simple as I can, and they will appear at the bottom of each post, along with the link tool. I look forward to getting to know you, and I hope this will be a source of encouragement and good ideas for all of us.

Grab a cup of coffee and let's get started!

I got a new mug, and it seems pretty accurate!

Homeschool news  . . . Overall this was a fairly productive school week, even though we were still getting over our colds from last week and were just plain tired. All Kennady's homework for co-op did get done, and I did get everything prepared for my classes, although I have to admit I needed to stay up too late on Wednesday to finish doing that. The lessons had been prepared so I really just needed to refresh my memory, but I thought I'd finished grading all the papers before Christmas only to realize I hadn't written up the feedback for them. Anyway, lesson learned for me.

This was to be the final Speech and Presentation class but they are going one more week. And now Kennady is thinking about maybe taking the Intro to Business class that instructor offers in second semester. All her classmates want her there, the instructor wants her there, and she kind of wants to do it now - except that it would be more homework and reading and it's not a credit she really needs. Hmmm.

Our Creative Writing class enjoyed this literary quote that was part of our review of how to write dialogue. Do you recognize it?

And finally, with Kennady entering her final semester, I suggested that we need to have an End of Semester conference. She meets with me and dad, and we lay out exactly what she needs to complete in order to graduate, and we make the decisions together about that Business class and the next steps as far as college decisions. I think we'll do that Monday. I don't think it can wait past that, if for no other reason than needing to register her for the Business class if she wants it.

Other news . . . The weekend was a quiet one for us, mostly because we just weren't feeling that good. All the Christmas decorations had to come down by Sunday night and that went more quickly than I'd expected. With only one casualty - my Calgary Flames ornament that I think I got the second Christmas after I got married. In other words, it's almost an antique.

We were back to our regular midweek activities at church this week, and it was obvious we'd been out of the habit of going out on Wednesdays, because it seemed pretty scrambly. Even though I didn't even work on Wednesday!

Thursday was especially busy because we were back to co-op, plus Kennady and I had the grad planning meeting in the evening. I could have put that in the Homeschool section, but I didn't. It's here. It's a bigger graduating class again this year, and while some parts of the planning went very well and were positive, there were other aspects that did not go as well and were actually pretty frustrating for us. I'm sure it will shake out just fine, but to be honest I'm feeling rather negative at the moment.

What I'm Learning . . . I might have known that right after I posted my Word of the Year thoughts about needing to practice trust, I would have plenty of opportunity to do just that. Or at least be presented with one thing after another that was unexpected, or went differently that I wanted or expected, or is just full of uncertainty. I'm tired and frankly just a bit cranky, and I don't feel peaceful or hopeful. I'd like to give full vent to my frustration, or have a good cry, or give people a piece of my mind. For real, I am planning to have a little bit of a self-care night soon (maybe tonight!) that might involve allowing myself to cry or punch something inanimate so I can get it out of my system. But at the same time, I know I need to trust God to work things out and to be there for me whether things work the way I like or not.

What's a mom to do? The only thing that makes sense is to trust. Not myself, not my heart, not chance or fate. I have to trust the only One who does know what's coming next, who knows the answers to all the questions, and whose plans are for our good. Often I think I've got things figured out, or know what's best, but I don't have all the information. I might think my plan is a good one, and it might seem so from my perspective, but God sees from eternity's perspective. His plans are good for me and for others too. And God's Word even tells us that he can do so much more than we can ask or imagine! In other words, my plans are sometimes too small - God might have something so much greater in mind! Whatever it is, his ways are best.
You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD himself, is the Rock eternal. ~Isaiah 26:3-4

We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love be with us, LORD, even as we hope in you.
~Psalm 33:20-22

Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.
~Psalm 37:3-6

That is a beautiful sunset! I think this might be the only year we didn't have a casualty of an ornament.
