Coffee Break Reading List (January 7, 2020)

It's been a long time since I shared a reading list, and the busy-ness of the holidays are only partly to blame. In general, I've been busy! And my routines have been switched up and interrupted so much lately. I've been looking at my posting expectations for my blogs lately and considering some adjustments and changes. I want to keep this round-up of articles and resources going, although I may change content a little as we go, but my plan is to keep sharing my Coffee Break Reading Lists every other week. And yes, I do want to get back to posting it on Monday morning! Time got away from me (I'm usually at work on Mondays) so instead of posting late at night on Monday, I decided to post on Tuesday morning.

Some of the things around the web that I've been reading or exploring during recent coffee breaks:

  • This Southern Living article, Why You Should Plan a Trip with Your Mother Every Year, really spoke to me for a couple reasons. I just booked an upcoming trip that does involve me visiting my mom. It's a short trip for me to see family, so I'm not sure how much time I'll have with just Mom, but it's timely! And my own daughter and I have kicked around the idea of going on a road trip together. We've done a couple of trips together, and as she's now a young adult and family vacations may be a thing of the past, I hope that she and I will still be able to do fun things together regularly - and yes, maybe even travel together sometimes!
  • Did you know that The American Accent is Older than the British Accent? Curiosity.com makes the case, and it's an interesting history lesson.
  • One book that all four of my kids were expected to read during high school was the classic To Kill A Mockingbird. I believe it's an important story and puts a piece of America's history into context in a compelling way. I found this piece at Intellectual Takeout that talks about Why 'Uncomfortable' Books Like 'To Kill A Mockingbird' Are Precisely the Ones Kids Should Be Reading. What do you think?

Some fun things I've found during coffee breaks:

Did you know?

Last time I shared a Reading List I talked about how much I love the Strange Planet comics by Nathan Pyle. At the time I was excited about my pre-ordered copy of the book that would soon arrive. It was SO worth it! I love it! Go check it out on Amazon: Strange Planet

So funny and so sweet. I'm already looking forward to a second volume!

Some things Homeschool Review Crew members are sharing:
  • I'm no longer an active member of the Homeschool Review Crew, but I am still following and recommending their reviews and articles. Drop by and visit the Crew blog and see what's happening! Just today they kicked off their new year by sharing reviews of SchoolhouseTeachers.com. Crew members also recently wrote about their choices for 2020 Word of the Year.
  • Having mentioned SchoolhouseTeachers.com, I want to also mention what a fantastic resource that website is for homeschooling families! Filmmaking. Economics. Statistics. Beginner Drum Lessons. Advanced Public Speaking. Basics of the Christian Faith. Internet Entrepeneurship for Teens. These are just a few of the 400+ courses that homeschoolers can take at SchoolhouseTeachers.com. It's a full curriculum website for homeschoolers, with everyday great pricing, but now through January 31, 2020 they are offering the Fresh Start sale. Join by the end of this month and save over 50% on an Ultimate Membership that gives your whole family unlimited access to the site. Lock in the rate of $99/year (code: ONLY99) or $12/month (code: ONLY12) for the lifetime of your membership.

May I also put in a mention for a new link-up I'm starting this week - Twenty Six Lists. Every other week I'll have a list prompt and invite others to join in and share their lists.

What I've been reading during longer coffee breaks:

Penny For Your Secrets by Anna Lee Huber
Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie
She Laughs by Carolanne Miljavac
Until the Mountains Fall by Connilyn Cossette

My mom and I took a trip two years ago to visit my sister and we had so much fun we are talking about making it an annual thing. This year we're toying with the idea of my mom, myself, and both my sisters picking a destination to go to together away from all our families. I'm pretty excited about that and hope it comes to fruition.
