Welcome to Twenty Six Lists! I hope you'll join me in using some fun List prompts for writing. Every other week I'll share a writing prompt and invite you to link up your list, and wherever the prompt takes you. You may want to simply make a list of five or ten items that answer the prompt, or you may elaborate on the items in your list, or even write an entire article. Be creative, and have fun!
For a little background on why I'm doing this link-up, see the first list: Goals for 2020
Earlier this week many of us got a bit of a holiday. It was Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which has become not just a day to remember the contributions of Dr King as a civil rights leader, but is recognized as a Day of Service. What acts of service could we be doing throughout the year to spread smiles and kindness? A smile, a compliment, an unexpected gift . . . well, maybe I should start a list!
List #2 - Random Acts of Kindness
Some of these are really super simple, and cost nothing. And are things that I try to do - or should be doing - in everyday interactions anyway. And others are extra blessings and might require more effort or a little money. The point, I think, is to pay attention and develop the habit of extending grace and kindness to others. I need a refresher course and a reminder sometimes. (I'm keeping my list super short, because I'm on vacation and have limited internet.)
- Offer to help someone out, without waiting for them to ask. This just requires paying attention to people around me, and being courteous. Holding a door, grabbing a shopping cart, picking up a dropped item, or simply asking if there's something I can help with. We all feel awkward asking a stranger to help out with these simple little things, but doesn't it brighten the day when somebody notices you and says, "Let me give you a hand with that."
- Call people by name and be friendly. I try very hard to remember the names of the regular customers in my workplace, and to remember what coffees they prefer. Like the theme song for the show "Cheers" - we want to go where people know our name. I can do better though, like being kind and assuming the best of people when I make phone calls (I hate making calls!) or being friendly and complimentary to the people who serve me.
- Give sincere compliments often. I am training myself to speak up when I particularly like someone's hair or outfit, when kids are well-behaved or super cute, when someone does a great job of something, or has been really helpful. A lot of times I intend to tell people they did a great job of whatever, but miss my chance in the moment, so I am trying to remember to send a text or a message as soon as possible afterwards.
- Leave quarters at the laundromat or by a vending machine, or feed a stranger's parking meter.
- Leave cheery notes on car windshields, or leave kindness rocks to brighten someone's day. Check out Car Window Poetry for ideas, or look for a Kindness Rocks group in your area. Many of them have Facebook groups.
- The classic - Pay it backward - pay for the person behind you in the drive-through or in the coffee shop line.
These are just a tiny sample of all the ways we can share kindness with others. I wish I had time to list lots more, and I wish I was better at remembering to do all of these more often!
I'll leave you with some photos of Kindness Rocks.
