Welcome to another edition of the Coffee Break Reading List! Because today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, some of my reading suggestions will focus on him and his legacy. As this holiday has become a Day of Service in recent years, my Twenty Six Lists prompt for this Thursday is Random Acts of Kindness. I hope you'll stop by and participate in that list link-up!
Some of the things around the web that I've been reading or exploring during recent coffee breaks:
- Visit Biography.com to learn a little background about one of the most famous speeches in American history: Martin Luther King Jr's Famous Speech Almost Didn't Have the Phrase 'I Have A Dream'. And then check out these YouTube videos for a little background, and to hear the speech.
- If you'd like to read the full text of Dr. King's speech, you can find the pdf here: "I Have A Dream" speech.
- Awhile ago, I found this thought-provoking article on GregTrimble.com - The Most Dangerous Temptation That Faces Our Youth. He makes a powerful case for the importance of choosing friends wisely, especially for young people.
- If you're homeschooling more than one child, you probably already know that each child is different. In general, boys and girls learn very differently, and it's worth paying attention to those tendencies. Here's an article on Deep Roots At Home that breaks it down: Boys Think, See, Hear & Process Very Differently Than Girls.
Some fun things I've found during coffee breaks:
Some things Homechool Review Crew members are sharing:
- I'm no longer an active member of the Homeschool Review Crew, but I am still following and recommending their reviews and articles. Drop by and visit the Crew blog and see what's happening! The current feature article is Start a Reading Challenge to Conquer Screen Time by Amy Arthur who blogs at Cattle Upon A Hill. Her blog looks like the place to go for hobby farm and homesteading advice!
- The Crew reviews of SchoolhouseTeachers.com are all available on the blog. Since Crew members have families of all sizes and homeschool kids of all ages and grades and interests, each review covers some different aspects of SchoolhouseTeachers.com. It's a great resource for homeschooling families! Prices will be going up in February, as SchoolhouseTeachers.com is now a full curriculum website offering every core subject for every grade. Current members will be unaffected by the price increase, so the best time to sign up is now, during the Fresh Start sale. Your entire family will enjoy unlimited, online access to more than 400 self-paced courses, 450 streaming videos, 10 Libraries of World Book Online, and more! Use the coupon code ONLY99 to pay $99 annually, or ONLY12 to pay $12 monthly.
What I've been reading during longer coffee breaks:
Until the Mountains Fall by Connilyn Cossette
The Friendly Persuasion by Jessamyn West
The Blizzard Bride by Susanne Dietze
Warriors Don't Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals
