Some of the things around the web that I've been reading or exploring during recent coffee breaks:
- Aren't you getting tired of everything being political somehow? I am. Obviously some things just are political, but a lot of things are tied to politics that really shouldn't be. This article at Reason.com explains why it's become that way, and it's pretty interesting. And the article is not political - it just explains why everything else is, and why we shouldn't let it stay that way. It's Not Just Face Masks. Everything Is Now A Political Death Match.
- On July 1st, one of my favorite columnists, Walter E. Williams, wrote this tribute to another one of my favorite columnists, economist Thomas Sowell. Happy Birthday to an Underappreciated American Scholar.
- I don't quite remember how I got there, but I went down a fascinating rabbit trail a couple weeks ago. It took me to The Guardian and The real Lord of the Flies: what happened when six boys were shipwrecked for 15 months, and The 'real Lord of the Flies': a survivor's story of shipwreck and salvation. Fascinating stuff!
- Huge topic of discussion around the country these days is whether schools should reopen, and how. I've got lots of mixed feelings and opinions on it, honestly. It doesn't directly affect me at this point, of course, but it indirectly affects all of us. With the reopening plans constantly changing, this article at Intellectual Takeout did not come as any surprise: Back to School? 'No Thanks' Say Millions of New Homeschoolers. I can tell you that I've fielded a lot of questions about how to get started homeschooling lately!
- Thanks to my online Homeschool Review Crew friend Chareen (who blogs at Every Bed of Roses) I've been following her husband's photos on Instagram (@servalpaul). Paul is a zoo keeper and recently he shared this virtual visit with the koalas:
Okay, since I mentioned families new to homeschooling, or considering homeschooling, I want to share some articles I've written recently highlighting some how-to and encouragement for those folks:

Some fun things I've found during coffee breaks:
- Some of these photos are fun, and some are poignant and serious, but the whole article is interesting. In case you thought selfies were still a pretty new thing, turns out they've been around for awhile. Bygonely shares these Earliest Historical Selfies Taken Long Before the Word Selfie was Introduced.
- At the beginning of this month was Independence Day, and also Canada Day. I was happy to find this little movie clip from Canada's 150th birthday a couple years ago on Toon Boom. This animation shows Canada Coast-to-Coast in 2 minutes!
What I've been reading during longer coffee breaks:
The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa
The Girl With the Louding Voice by Abi Dare
Ever Faithful by Karen Barnett
Church With No Walls by Noah Cleveland

And here I am a homeschooling mom who's son wants to head TO public school for the first time in a looong time this fall! I am having a few mixed feelings about it but I'm honest enough to admit I'd be feeling that way even without everything else that's going on in the world.
