Five Minute Friday - Mercy

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

Lord, have mercy

********************
Lord, have mercy. Kyrie eleison. Beautiful words that I associate with beautiful music, but it's also a heart-rending cry. Because we cry out for mercy when we are broken and hopeless. When we have come to the end of our resources, or realize that we don't even have resources. When we know we are beaten and defenseless.

Then we finally plead with God to show his mercy and save us.

Guard my life, for I am faithful to you;
save your servant who trusts in you.
You are my God;
have mercy on me, LORD,
for I call to you all day long.
~Psalm 86:2-3~

And he does. Over and over again he shows his mercy. Even before we ask. He forgives our sin, he offers us restoration and eternal life.

He heals our wounds, even those we inflict on ourselves. Everything good that we have is because of God's mercy.

Hear, LORD, and be merciful to me;
LORD, be my help.
You turned my wailing into dancing;
you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,
that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent.
LORD my God, I will praise you forever.
~Psalm 30:10-12~

Do we remember God's mercy to us in our everyday? Are we grateful for God's great mercy to us?

Do we extend mercy to others?

Lord, have mercy.

The music in that video is hauntingly beautiful. And so is God's mercy. It invites me in and makes me uncomfortable in the best possible way.

Beautiful music and yes the cry of the heart, our plea for mercy comes when we recognise that can do nothing to save ourselves - thank God that's when He extends His hand.

If we could but look inwards
and see what God placed there,
no longer would we sinners
refuse to love or care
about mirror'd reflection;
we'd hold that person dear,
for it is our direction
(God has made that clear)
that we're to love our brothers,
and also love ourselves;
no distinction and no 'others',
no reject for the shelves,
just forgiveness for the confessed flaw,
not holding self to higher law.
