Coffee Break Reading List - September 16, 2020

It's been two months since I did one of these summaries, and I'm a little embarrassed that I've neglected doing this. Not sure what I'll come up from my little collection of recent rabbit trails to share with you, but here we go!

Some of the things around the web that I've been reading or exploring during recent coffee breaks:
I'm convinced that our dinner tables have the potential to be the most "missional" places in all of our lives. Perhaps before we invite people to Jesus or invite them to church, we should invite them to dinner.
  • Way back in the spring, schools closed all over North America, and for a majority of kids the couple weeks of "break" turned into months of virtual classrooms and distance learning . . . and isolation. A Canadian Teen's Short Film Hauntingly Captures How a Pandemic Loop Feels (on HuffPost) and it was moving to watch back in June. Now here we are in the middle of September, a few weeks into a new school year, and in my state kids still are not back in school. And yes, as a homeschool advocate, I have lots of mixed feeling about it, but the bottom line is that it is not healthy for kids to be isolated and disconnected.
  • The homeschool tutorial where I teach has opened for the year and we are having in-person instruction. Some of the other homeschool co-ops in our state have opened as well, but not all. Some private schools are open, but with restrictions and masks. Public schools are not open in our state, and most are resisting pressure to reopen. And how are students continuing in virtual learning when the schools are closed? Many have to find somewhere else to access the internet or to be supervised while parents return to work. Religion News Service reported that Schools may not open to students this fall, but churches might - for remote learning. Kudos to the churches that are doing this - I wish our church could have.

Some fun things I've found during coffee breaks:
This quote and photo was far more appropriate a month ago, but I love it so much I'm sharing it now, even though the weather is much more comfortable now! (I have no excuse for my state of inelegance at this point, I suppose.)

What I've been reading during longer coffee breaks:

Ever Faithful by Karen Barnett
The Seaside Affair by Vicki Hopkins
A Stroke of Malice by Anna Lee Huber
