In most high school diploma programs, at least one credit in the fine arts is required for graduation. For students that are interested and inclined to be artistic or musical, that can be easy! For students that are not particularly interested in art, that can be daunting. And either way, you'll need some curriculum or lessons, or some way to quantify the credit you're awarding. Studio music lessons aside, here are a few other possibilities for arts and music to consider.

Creating a Masterpiece is an online art instruction program taught by master artist Sharon Hofer. It's rather like attending a fine art school, where students learn technique and are guided in creating excellent artwork that they could be proud to show off. The video instruction course has easy to follow step-by-step instructions showing students how to create high-quality art pieces using many different media, and can be used by students of all ages. Art techniques in many media are covered, and students build mastery so they can create their own projects using the techniques learned. There is a Beginners Level, with projects that can be completed in a single session of an hour or less; and Levels 1 through 5 which are progressively more challenging, building skills and introducing new media. These projects are presented in three to seven lesson sessions. There are no grade levels assigned, so a high school junior that hasn't got a lot of art experience can do the Beginner Level and earn that credit.
The newest addition to the instruction offerings is the Drawing Program. In this series of lessons, Sharon Hofer focuses on drawing skills using pencils, colored pencils, and charcoal. The video instruction guides students step by step through the process of planning and creating their own fine art drawings, and along the way they learn about values, shading, and perspective.

ARTistic Pursuits Inc. publishes books that encourage children of all ages to get involved in the creative process and develop their observation skills. Brenda Ellis and Daniel Ellis are the authors, both with many years of experience in teaching fine arts. In addition to the wonderful, student-friendly series of art instruction books for age groups from preschool through high school, ARTistic Pursuits also offers two newer books - Sculpture Technique: Construct and Sculpture Technique: Model that introduce students from upper elementary through high school to three-dimensional art. All of the books have provided top notch art instruction written directly to the student, and the projects that my own artists have completed using these books have been varied and beautiful.
We've been privileged to review a couple of the ARTistic Pursuits books, and I've purchased some of them as well. We've reviewed Middle School 6-8 Book Two: Color and Composition, Sculpture Technique: Construct, and Sculpture Technique: Model; and have purchased and used Middle School 6-8 Book One: The Elements of Art and Composition, and High School 9-12 Book One: The Elements of Art and Composition.

ArtAchieve is a series of online art lessons inspired by art from around the world. Each lesson includes links and information for making those cross-curricular connections between art, music, science, social studies, and language arts. The focus is on creating the art, however, and on learning and developing the skill of drawing. There's plenty of opportunity in each lesson for students to practice observing carefully and thinking creatively.
These art lessons were developed by author John Hofland as he and his wife homeschooled their children, and when John was teaching a university drawing course for theatrical stage design students. Although the lessons were adapted for elementary and middle school classrooms, there is definitely enough material there, and enough challenge, for the instruction to be worthwhile for high school students as well. Especially students who have not done much serious art previously.
The lessons on ArtAchieve are organized into five levels, which are not necessarily related to academic grades or age, but the amount of experience students have had in art. It's recommended that those who have no background in drawing start with Level I, whether they are in first grade or high school.

SchoolhouseTeachers.com has a large selection of art curriculum, and one of the newest that caught my eye recently is Drawing in Pen and Ink. This course is described as perfect for a budding artist who doesn't like to paint or sculpt and has an affinity for the classic look of a black and white image. Students will learn how to use textures, how to use value scales and lighting, and will draw a still life, animals, landscapes, and more, while using image references to guide them.

Right now it might be a challenge to find a music teacher giving in-person lessons, a choir or orchestra meeting in-person, or in-person art lessons. But there are plenty of resources and methods for doing the Fine Arts portion of your high school education, and with a little creativity you might be surprised at what you're able to do!
As always, I'd be delighted to answer further questions about these resources, or any questions you may have about homeschooling.
