Twenty-Six Lists - Joy in Simple Things - #twentysixlists

Welcome to Twenty Six Lists! I hope you'll join me in using some fun List prompts for writing. Every other week I'll share a writing prompt and invite you to link up your list, and wherever the prompt takes you. You may want to simply make a list of five or ten items that answer the prompt, or you may elaborate on the items in your list, or even write an entire article. Be creative, and have fun!

This should be a simple list, and yet I can see how it could be a lengthy one. I'm always a little stumped when someone asks me for gift ideas for myself. My mother-in-law loved to give gifts and asked this often. Obviously if money were no object, I could ask for lots of cash or a new car or a vacation. But realistically? The things that I hoped for at Christmas or on my birthday were not that big. I'm listing a few of those today, and also some of the little everyday luxuries or experiences that bring me joy.

List #19 - Simple Pleasures
  • Bubble bath - For almost as long as I can remember, I've loved to soak in a hot bubble bath. Even better if I can sit there with a good book. Getting a bottle of bubble bath in one of my favorite scents has been a favorite gift to receive for so many years. (Just not anything rose-scented!)
  • A good book and a quiet, comfortable place to read.
  • Coffee. I love trying coffee from small roasters, and yes I love my standard favorites - Tim Horton's and Starbucks. I also have a large collection of Tim Horton mugs and that's another favorite Christmas gift!
  • My favorite chocolate treats are Coffee Crisp bars, and anything dark chocolate. Since Coffee Crisps are hard to find in the US, I used to always ask for a stash of Coffee Crisps for Christmas.
  • Fresh-baked bread. I love bread. It's my favorite food. I bake my own bread and it's one of the most satisfying things I do for myself (and my family!), even if I know I shouldn't be eating that many carbs.
  • Flowers. My favorites are the simple ones like daisies, lily of the valley, and tulips. And wildflowers. Because I don't like to garden! I've discovered that having a vase of fresh flowers - something simple from our yard, or a really cheap supermarket bouquet - in my dining room cheers me up and makes me smile. Worth it.
  • Stargazing. One of my most favorite things about living out on this rural road is that it's good and dark at night, and the stars are amazing. Almost every time I pull into my driveway on a clear night, I stand beside the car for a bit and look at the moon and stars and just marvel. And I'm so thankful to live where there's so little light pollution. Related delights are the sunrise and sunset.
  • Weather watching. I love fog. I love dewdrops and frost. I love sitting on the covered porch with the family and watching a thunderstorm roll in, or the heat lightning off in the distance. I love softly falling snow.
  • Music - listening to music and making music. This is a joy that is very simple and yet so profound. One of the things I love most is the privilege of leading worship regularly with my family.
I'm stopping there, or I'd go on for much too long, and I kind of want to end on that note about making music with my family. Since I'm writing in the evening, I'm also about to go have a nice hot bath and read a few chapters of a good book.

I don't know what a coffee crisp is but they look like something I'd enjoy! What wonderful simple pleasures.
