Five Minute Friday - Order

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

get things in order
that's an order
law and order
birth order

********************
It feels like I am in a never-ending quest to get things in order. My organizational style defaults to stacks and piles of things, despite my often intense desire to have things alphabetized or sorted by color or lined up just so.

Oh it can be frustrating when the order I'd like to have and the reality don't line up! I wish my desk was tidy and well-organized but I don't have the time to give it a complete overhaul and put it that way. My husband asks me where certain papers are and can't figure out my filing or stacking system himself. I tell myself that as long as I know where to find it, it's okay - but what if I'm not here? Someone else needs to be able to make sense of things too. It's strange to have certain things neat and orderly but then in another part of the same room, it looks like chaos.

We have different ideas of what order looks like and different levels of motivation to make order happen, but we all seem to have a desire to have things in order. Even though I don't like the process of cleaning and organizing, I'm often surprised at how satisfying and settling it feels to see order.

I think that because God's creativity and sovereignty is expressed in how he keeps things in order, he has given each of us a longing for order in some way as well. God's creative design from cells to galaxies is orderly. The natural laws he put in place are predictable and ensure order. A field of wildflowers and meadow grasses has a different kind of order than a carefully cultivated and curated herb garden, but it is ordered all the same. Our appreciation of beauty is connected to our seeing the wonder of form and function and color and design . . . order.

We don't feel safe or certain when we are surrounded by chaos. And we acknowledge this in our households, our neighborhoods, our workplaces, our political landscapes. But how often do we recognize that we have chaos in our hearts and lives because of sin and because our own attempts at order and control are so flawed? Only God can create order out of that chaos when we turn it over to him. Our desire and appreciation for beauty and order comes from God - I believe it's part of the eternity he has placed in us - and he invites us to participate in that creative process with him. As he creates order and beauty in our hearts, we can start bringing order and beauty to the world around us.

*******

Dominion and awe belong to God;
he establishes order in the heights of heaven.
~Job 25:2~

For all the earth is the LORD's,
and he has set the world in order.
~I Samuel 2:8~

Hi, I'm your neighbor today. I love this line you wrote. There is order in creativity, order in His sovereignty and that touches our soul. Wow, something to contemplate. When life looks messy, look to Jesus. Rhonda

one of the things I find most interesting is how one person's chaos is another person's order. But God's order trumps it all regardless. :)

Aren't you glad that we don't have to be perfect in the eyes of the world for God to accept us into His family? I often wonder what Heaven looks like. Will the streets on a be nice even grid or more like a drive in the country? Even though I love order, I prefer the winding country roads instead of the strict grids of the city.

I am a quite well-ordered man
with a thought-out style,
and a strong strategic plan
to throw things on a pile.
The bottom's first priority,
but I will lean toward,
attendance to heart-needs of me
so I don't get bored.
The advert that came in today,
for a car that gives me chills
will appropriately delay
a look a tedious bills,
but they'll get their turn in the ring
when the dunning calls begin.
