One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

There are several nuanced definitions of the word "commit" but to me each one conveys that when you commit something or commit to something, you are all in. If you commit an error or a sin, you did the deed. If you commit something to memory, you have dedicated yourself to preserving it in your mind. If you commit to a cause or course of action, you have made a declaration that you will follow through and do what you've promised.

Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality. ~Abraham Lincoln

One common criticism of people in today's society is their general lack of commitment. Young people don't put much effort into schoolwork. People don't bother to show up to work. Plans are abandoned. Relationships are broken. We might start strong and have big hopes and dreams for what we'll accomplish, but without commitment, we're tempted to give up when we hit a roadblock, when we're tired, or when we don't get instant results.

Motivation is what gets you started. Commitment is what keeps you going. ~Jim Rohn

A quick search of quotes about commitment led me to two I really liked from Vince Lombardi, and I noticed a lot of statements about commitment from athletes. Serious athletes - like the teams competing at the Superbowl this weekend, and the athletes competing at the Olympics - have made a commitment to their sport. Many of them started focusing on their sport from a young age. They keep showing up to practice, they keep working out, they keep their bodies healthy, and they keep their attention focused on the goal. Many times they sacrifice other things because they are committed to their goals.

Most people fail not because of a lack of desire but because of a lack of commitment. ~Vince Lombardi

The quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor. ~Vince Lombardi

In just a few days, it will be Valentine's Day, when we're encouraged to shower our sweethearts with flowers and chocolate. Hopefully, the special dates and the gifts are reminders of the commitments made, celebrations of promises we are keeping and will continue to keep.

The most important commitment we can make is to trust and obey the Lord. All of our plans and good intentions mean little if we're not following Jesus.

Trust in the LORD and do good;
dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Take delight in the LORD,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the LORD;
trust in him and he will do this:
He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn,
your vindication like the noonday sun.
~Psalm 37:3-6~

Let's commit first to the Lord, and let him guide our plans and endeavors.

All a person's ways seem pure to them,
but motives are weighed by the LORD.
Commit to the LORD whatever you do,
and he will establish your plans.
~Proverbs 16:2-3~

So many hopes and gold-bright dreams
to which I thought myself committed
have vanished down time's flowing streams,
but I am yet aquitted
of failure, sloth, and laziness
for really, I did try,
but cancer's made of life a mess,
and so I wave goodbye
to what I thought was destiny,
my purpose here fulfilled;
instead I stand alone, just me,
accepting what God's willed
and giving all, my very best
for this fatal final test.

And having someone drop a commitment to us can be so painful. I'm currently experiencing that, and it hits hard. May I value the commitments I make to others and to God.
