Homeschool Mother's Journal: Weird Weather Edition

In our homeschool... surprisingly, I think we got everything done that we'd intended, with the exception of some of the observations the boys were supposed to do for astronomy.  On Monday morning, we had a bit of a "class meeting" and worked out what our daily schedules should look like, and hopefully we can stick to those plans.

Our history lessons this week included a study of Glacier National Park, which I have visited.  I wish the kids could see it, but it's quite a hike from here!  Kennady kept busy doodling on the back of her notepaper while we were reading about it and looking at pictures...

Co-op class went well again this week, and I planned for a much shorter lesson so we had time to play some Monopoly in class!

In other news... we drove a rental car all week because our van was at the body shop.  I loved the chance to drive a sporty little car for a change, and the van came back looking better than ever.  Now we wait to see what our insurance rates will do when it's time to renew... Ugh.

The weather was crazy.  A little of everything, but despite a tornado watch, severe thunderstorm watch, and winter weather advisories, the worst we had to deal with was slippery roads at the beginning of the week and high winds on Wednesday night.  Apparently there was some local flooding on Thursday morning, as Harrison had to go the long way around to get to work, but that's not all that unusual when we've had rain.

Helpful homeschooling tips/advice to share... Doodling during lessons can often help reinforce what we're reading!

What's working/not working for us... So far I'm happy with our tweaked schedule.  We didn't change much, just pushed back our morning start time a little bit, and clarified how much time the kids are expected to put in.

Thoughts/questions I have... Who are the speakers for CHAP this year?  Registration just opened this weekend, but I haven't seen any info yet on the workshops.

One of my favorite things this week... believe it or not, the strange weather.  We had a little of everything this week - started out with freezing rain on Monday (which was not anyone's favorite!), then it was unseasonably warm by Wednesday during the daytime.  Wednesday night it got cold again, and the wind kicked up - and on Thursday morning it was foggy and cool.  I love fog.  Not for driving in, I guess, but I love how it looks.  And then back to snow again on Friday and Saturday.

A photo/video/quote or link to share... Found a website with Economics lessons that I think might be helpful for my co-op class: Economic Education Web

On the bookshelf...
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
  • Pemberley Ranch by Jack Caldwell
  • The Wolf of Tebron by C.S. Lakin
Finished Georgiana Darcy's Diary by Anna Elliott

A parting shot...

Wow Kym! That's a nifty looking braid. How pretty. You should share a tutorial on how to do that.

I agree that it's important to keep hands busy during reading. We love to do playdoh, watercolor, putty, or practice cutting paper while we read. It's amazing how much more they retain when they are quietly busy. But they sure do make a mess! :)

I find I listen better myself when I can doodle!
