Remember awhile back when we reviewed the online art program called ArtAchieve? In Level III, which we reviewed, there was a beautiful picture that I wanted Kennady to do for me, and she finally found the time this week. And that worked out so great, because it's just in time for me to feature this artwork and lesson for the letter U in Blogging Through the Alphabet.
This is a Ukrainian or Eastern European Firebird!
Ukrainian Firebird by KAT, June 2017 |
The firebird appears often in Russian and Ukrainian folktales and folk arts. It is symbolic of light, and is such a popular motif with artists because legend says that when a feather from the firebird's tail falls a new artistic tradition is born. The great Russian composer Igor Stravinsky wrote his ballet The Firebird based on this fairy tale creature. In the ballet and in many of the fairy tales, the firebird's glowing feathers light the way to success and happiness.
As the ArtAchieve lesson points out, the challenge for an artist is to show the glowing feathers of the firebird. I think Kennady did a lovely job using colored pencils and pastels.
