Welcome to Homeschool Highlights!
This weekly link-up is your opportunity to share some highlights of what is happening in your homeschool and in your world each week. If you write a wrap-up post at the end of each week, like I've been doing, we'd love to see what you're busy with from week to week. If you'd like to pick a favorite post from your week that spotlights a resource or activity in your homeschool that you'd like to tell others about, we're interested in those too. I'm keeping the guidelines as simple as I can, and they will appear at the bottom of each post, along with the link tool. I look forward to getting to know you, and I hope this will be a source of encouragement and good ideas for all of us.
Homeschool news . . . The goal this week was to knock out as much of the remaining Algebra as possible, and to start a solid History review focusing on World War II. Despite sleeping too late, working, and getting stuck a couple of times, Kennady did get a decent amount of algebra done. As always, I can't help but wish that she'd worked more on it months ago so that we didn't have to spend so much time on it during the summer, but what's done is done. And what's not done still needs to get done! We have a World War II timeline from Home School in the Woods that we're reviewing, so we started putting that together as our History review this week. She'll be away at camp next week so we'll finish it up when she gets back.
Also in the realm of homeschool news, we (the Board) had our planning meeting for the co-op yesterday, so I get to start contacting the families that have signed up students for my classes. In other words, things are getting real! We still have openings in high school classes, so I'm also helping to promote the co-op. My lesson plans for the American History class are pretty much ready, but I have to finish planning for the Creative Writing class.

Other news . . . Friday night we visited one of the local fireman's carnivals because we know this town has awesome fireworks. Really, their fireworks show is usually way better than the 4th of July fireworks in the city, and they did not disappoint. And of course we could enjoy the turtle races and get a funnel cake while we were waiting!
On Saturday I finally got a project checked off my to-do list. I've had the material sitting around for a couple of weeks to re-upholster my dining room chairs, but I had to wait for my contractor (otherwise known as my son Landon) to bring home a staple gun. And then I had to find the time. It got done on Saturday - the plaid covering got trashed and the chairs got a bit of a facelift (butt-lift?) with the dotted fabric.
On Sunday, Kennady went to a friend's grad party, and then on Monday we all tried to get back to our usual routines of work and school. That worked until Wednesday, when the coffee roastery where I work closed up shop to go on a company trip to Strasburg, PA, where we rode the steam train and had lunch at a great local buffet. All this to celebrate the five-year anniversary of one of our employees with a developmental disability. He loves trains, so this was a very special day for him, and we all had a great time! It was a beautiful day for the outing too.
The crazy busy of my schedule since Wednesday means that I'm very late getting this posted - sorry!! Sometimes I get my Homeschool Highlights post ready to go the night before, but I'm just not consistent enough. Something I need to work on. I didn't work on it yesterday because I was at work during the day, then had the co-op planning meeting in the evening.
What's Coming Up . . . We're working on a couple of interesting reviews. Coming the week of July 23rd, I'll have a review of an online video and study series from Northwest Treasures. The hubster and I are watching these videos and learning how geology and Biblical apologetics fit together.
Then the following week, we'll bring you our review of a timeline study from Home School In The Woods. One of the topics covered recently in Kennady's world history course was World War II, so our review of the WWII timeline is a good way to go over the chronology of the events and help her understand them a bit better.

I recommend . . . visiting the Homeschool Review Crew blog to see all kinds of product reviews, and in particular, to see all the ideas Crew members shared in this weekend's Hands On, Experiential, and Non-Book Learning Round-up.
On my blogs last week . . .
Here on Homeschool Coffee Break:
Virtual Refrigerator - Pineapple
Math Essentials Refresher Course - A Homeschool Coffee Break Review
And on my book blog, Just A Second:
What I'm Reading - July 9, 2018
Recent Reads - Together Forever
Scripture and a Snapshot - Praying For You
Just A Second is where I share book reviews and other book-related things, and update on what's on my bookshelf. This week I finished and reviewed Together Forever (Orphan Train) by Jody Hedlund, and I've been reading:
Delilah: Treacherous Beauty by Angela Hunt
A Daring Venture by Elizabeth Camden
A parting shot . . . turtle races at the carnival. Gambling on the turtles is our favorite thing! We usually play until we win a Coke, then go get a funnel cake and share. Small town silliness at its finest.
