How Do You Find Electives For a Student That Isn't Artsy? on Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

No matter how long we've been homeschooling, we are curious about how other homeschoolers do things. And homeschoolers who are newer to the game obviously have lots of questions! This series will try to answers some of the questions homeschoolers ask each other. Questions about how we handle some of the little details and about our opinions on different aspects of homeschooling. Questions that we all might answer differently because what works great in one family might not work at all in another.

Seems like I've been doing a lot of questions about electives lately, doesn't it? Well, here's another one that I answered in a guest post for the Heart and Soul Homeschooling blog

How do you find electives for a student that isn't artsy? What's out there for electives beyond art and music?

An elective is any class that isn't fulfilling another required credit. So any high school level course could be an elective! Obviously, electives usually bring to mind foreign languages, fine arts, music, and all those fun "extra" courses that are focused on the student's individual interests and pursuits. Sometimes we need to think outside the box just a little bit when figuring out what electives would be best for our kids, especially if they are not particularly interested in some of the more obvious electives like art or music study. Look for activities or topics that your student really enjoys, or to find electives related to what they want to pursue as a career. Students can also earn credit while learning specific career skills in internships or apprenticeships.

My own students completed electives in Public Speaking, Photography, Graphic Design, Drafting and Technical Drawing, Classical Astronomy, Economics, Aerospace Technology and Leadership (Civil Air Patrol), and Automotive Repair. Right now, my daughter is working on an apprenticeship style credit - learning to tune and repair pianos.

Don't be afraid to think outside the box, or outside of the traditional textbook, to find electives that your high schooler will enjoy and benefit from! Join me over at Heart and Soul where I share more ideas about finding high school electives Beyond Art and Music (the article will be live on Friday, October 26th). And as always, you'll find lots of helpful articles there about all kinds of homeschool topics.

What high school electives are you considering? Leave a comment and let me know - or leave a homeschool question you're curious about.
