As usual, we started our Memorial Day with a trip to town for the parade. Landon marched with Civil Air Patrol in the parade, and the rest of the family gathered to enjoy the sunshine, listen to the marching bands, and honor those who have served in the armed forces. Especially those who gave their lives in service.
Originally known as Decoration Day, an observance to honor those who died in the War Between the States was begun in the late 1860s with the practice of decorating graves of soldiers. After World War I, the name was changed to Memorial Day and included commemoration of American military personnel who died in all wars. In 1922 the VFW began selling poppies as a remembrance of those who died serving the country. This idea was inspired in 1915 by the poem In Flanders Fields. (Similar poppies are sold and worn as a remembrance in Canada and Europe for Remembrance Day on November 11th.)
