My coffee break is super late today!! I had a busy weekend and didn't have time to finish this up during my morning cup of joe, so I had to wait to share this until I had my evening coffee in my hand.
Some of the things around the web that I've been reading or exploring during recent coffee breaks:
- A Very Dangerous Place for a Child is College is an article on LinkedIn that I think is a must read for parents of high schoolers. It's written by an emergency doctor, from his perspective in treating patients who are students and speaking on campuses around the country. And by the way, it has little to do with faith. The dangers he talks about are centered around the lack of maturity in students who are at college. Not a direct quote, but he basically says this: Do not send your KID to college. They don't belong there unless they are an adult. It's not about their age or their aptitude, but about their maturity and purpose.
- Bring Back Handwriting: It's Good For Your Brain on Medium - I think the title of the article explains it! This is one of my pet topics, I know.
- Also on Medium: Why Listening to Sad Music Makes You Feel Better. Have you ever wondered why it is that it's so satisfying to listen to sad songs or watch a sad movie? In a way it doesn't make sense! This article explains some research that does try to make sense of this paradox, and I found it very interesting.
- And here's something special for homeschoolers and their students - The Homeschool House is a non-profit that shares homeschooling resources and materials. They mail out materials, supplies, and curriculum to homeschool families across the USA. They've helped hundreds of families in the past five years. The website is brand new, but is full of valuable information. Here's the direct link if you'd like more info about requesting materials from them: The Homeschool House materials request page. Two of the students are starting a teen literary magazine called Chicken Scratch. Visit Xander's Farm Chicken Scratch Magazine to find out more. Homeschooled students ages 12 through 18 are invited to submit original work for publication. All the details are at the site!
Some fun things I've found during coffee breaks:
When your washing machine doesn't work so you go to the laundromat, and your daughter turns it into a photo shoot:
Some things Homechool Review Crew members are sharing:
- Recent Crew reviews include: Soundsory; and Have I Got A Story For You Art History Series.
- You'll also want to check out the September Edition of the Homeschool Collection on the Crew blog. There are a lot of great articles from Crew bloggers to look at, including a couple from Lisa's sweet blog called Maggie's Milk. Start with this one: Three Reasons to Give Your Child a Day.
What I've been reading during longer coffee breaks:
Detective Trigger and the Ruby Collar by M.A. Owens
Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton
A Stranger at Fellsworth by Sarah E. Ladd

Great links. I am looking forward to reading the one about sending kids/adults to college. It is something my husband and I have discussed.
