Five Minute Friday - Complete

In the grading programs I use to keep track of the co-op classes I teach, there are a couple of different ways one can mark an assignment as 'complete'. If it's an ungraded assignment, such as something we do in class, the student can simply mark it as complete themselves. But we've encountered some odd things with the graded assignments. Sometimes a student will submit the assignment and I can see the document attached, but the program doesn't recognize that there's a file there. And sometimes students email their assignment to me or turn in the hard copy but for whatever reason they don't submit online. And that assignment shows as 'late' or 'missing'.

Until I give it a grade. As the teacher I can give the assignment a grade even if the program can't tell there's a file attached or has no way of knowing that the hard copy of the assignment is in my hand. But when I give the assignment a grade, it is marked as complete, and the student doesn't 'owe' me that paper any more.

No matter what we do as humans, our attempts to "submit the assignment" will fail. Even when we manage to get something submitted, the system won't recognize it and it won't come anywhere close to a passing grade. There is not a thing we can do about it, because our very best work will not cut it.

So we can be ever so thankful (on this Thanksgiving weekend!) that our Teacher looks at his gradebook and sees his own work on the cross, and marks our assignment as complete. All we need to do is accept that passing grade, and we can quit trying to earn our own grade for that assignment. In gratitude, we do our best work for the Master going forward.
