Q is for... Queso

That's right - CHEESE. My family's Spanish vocabulary is limited, but this is one Spanish word we do know and we use it often.

Any time we visit the Wegman's supermarket, it's a field trip of its own, and a huge drawing card is the cheese department, as I explain in A Foodie-Type Photojournal.

I love it when we can relate food or art to our studies, and certainly recipes can play a big role in history and social studies. When we come across a recipe that features cheese, there's a much better chance we'll want to try it, because we all like cheese!

Last year we found a new favorite kind of cheese - white cheeses specifically for frying, like Queso De Freir and Queso Blanco. Oh.My.Word. You must try this. This is from my post Eating the Americas: Argentina and Bolivia.

and the cheese looks like this frying in my skillet.

At least that's what it looks like before I or one of my family members gobbles it up. See how it fries up toasty brown without getting runny and globby? It keeps its shape when heated, and without any breaded coating. We just sliced it and threw it in a very lightly greased skillet, and we could probably eat this for lunch every day. In fact, one of my boys has been asking for it for lunch every day since.

Corn on the Cob with Fried CheeseBoil husked sweet corn until done. Meanwhile, fry your queso blanco or queso de friere in a skillet over medium heat until both sides have a crispy golden coating. Place a slice of fried cheese on each ear of corn and serve immediately.

We also tried Llapingachos, which are fried cheese-potato cakes from Ecuador. And of course we had cheese in its best Canadian setting: Poutine.

In previous years, we've had Queso Frito (Fried Cheese) from Spain, Potato-Cheese Souffle, and Brie from France (Brie was NOT a favorite though); Khachapuri (Cheese Bread) from Georgia, which the kids loved;
Feta and Chicken Pie from Greece (also well-received and has been requested since its debut) -
Our Italian menu included Fettucine Alfredo, which uses Parmesan cheese. By the way, it's what's for dinner tonight too.

Although they didn't relate to our schoolwork, I felt like I needed to share this cheesy recipe on my blog too:

Cheese even figures into our vacation plans sometimes. This is from my post Think Back Thursday: Vacation:

We made sure to visit Melt Bar and Grilled in Cleveland, since we'd seen it featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives with Guy Fieri. A whole restaurant built around grilled cheese sammiches - what is not to love? It was really good, and totally worth every minute we waited for a table and every dollar we paid. (Please tell me we're not the only family that plans vacations around the eateries we see on Triple-D?!)

Goodness, I even have a blog label for "cheese" so you can see all my cheese-related posts. Is it odd that cheese pictures make an appearance in several Beauty Captured posts?

I'm hungry now. Gonna go have some cheese and crackers! What's your favorite cheese? Leave a comment and let me know!

Wow I want to eat at your house. It all looks so good. I have never seen the frying cheese before but I will have to look for it because it looks great.
