Homeschool Highlights - September

This post contains affiliate links - using affiliate links from Homeschool Coffee Break helps fuel this blog and our homeschool - thank you!

Welcome to Homeschool Highlights!
This weekly link-up is your opportunity to share some highlights of what is happening in your homeschool and in your world each week. If you write a wrap-up post at the end of each week, like I've been doing, we'd love to see what you're busy with from week to week. If you'd like to pick a favorite post from your week that spotlights a resource or activity in your homeschool that you'd like to tell others about, we're interested in those too. I'm keeping the guidelines as simple as I can, and they will appear at the bottom of each post, along with the link tool. I look forward to getting to know you, and I hope this will be a source of encouragement and good ideas for all of us.

Grab a cup of coffee and let's get started!

How is it September already? I must say we've welcomed the slightly cooler temperatures though, even if we're a little reluctant to say good-bye to summer.

Homeschool news  . . . we're in the final stages of preparing for our new school year, and Kennady's been working through a college prep website that is helping her assess her learning style and preferences so she can be as efficient as possible. We've been talking about how we're going to structure our days and weeks, and how we can organize her assignment lists to make it easy for her to keep track of what needs to be done and when. I think I've got our lesson plans all ready to go, but I do need to work on a syllabus and some details of my lesson plans for the co-op. Yeah, the co-op that starts next week! We had a kickoff picnic yesterday so that everyone could meet the teachers and each other. Oh, and Saturday we had our opening meeting for our umbrella/oversight group, so officially speaking the school year has begun, even though we haven't had any classes yet in our homeschool.

Other news . . . Kennady was glad to be more or less finished with her summer job, because now she can sleep a little later in the mornings! She will probably work one day a week for the next couple of weeks, and maybe be available as needed when the greenhouse is especially busy. Mostly this week was characterized by work for all of us, since I worked extra as well, covering for the other shop manager so she could spend time with her kids before they start school.

Last Friday evening our whole family was invited to the company picnic for Landon's work. Since the family that owns the company attends our church, we knew pretty much everyone and that made it a fun relaxed time. Good food too!

Yesterday was a milestone day, as we finally had the time in the schedule for me to take Kennady to get her Learner's Permit! So now the fun begins - she needs to actually get behind the wheel and start practicing her driving skills. Her dad and I are still negotiating to see who will start the instruction.

What's Coming Up . . . being the first of the month, I thought I'd give a quick preview of the reviews we're working on. They are mostly fun reviews right now, rather than academic ones! The exception is the web-based program I mentioned that Kennady is using. It's called GATE, and we're putting together a review of the program for The Old Schoolhouse magazine. After it's published there, I will share the review here on my blog as well.

We have these reviews on the go for the Homeschool Review Crew:

-A gospel tract called Is There Anything Better Than Candy? from Let the Little Children Come which we'll feature next week, and then later on we'll also review their Gospel Tracts and Evangelism Tools Sampler Pack.

Let the Little Children Come Halloween Tract

-From Chara Games we have a role play card game called Unauthorized, which we'll review in a couple weeks.

-And from one of our favorite vendors, Heirloom Audio Productions, we are reviewing their latest audio adventure, Captain Bayley's Heir.

I recommend . . . stopping by my book blog to check out Patterns of Evidence: The Exodus (Review and Giveaway). It's a great DVD about the archaeological evidence related to the Biblical story of the Exodus, and FlyBy Promotions has made it possible for me to give away a copy. So please enter, and good luck!

On my blogs last week . . .

And on my book blog, Just A Second:

Recent Reads - The Lightkeeper's Ball
Bookshelf Review - August 2017
Patterns of Evidence: The Exodus (Review and Giveaway)
Wordless Wednesday - Alum Creek Park North
What I'm Reading - August 28, 2017

Just A Second is where I share book reviews and other book-related things, and update on what's on my bookshelf. This week I finished and reviewed Egypt's Sister: A Novel of Cleopatra by Angela Hunt and The Lightkeeper's Ball (A Mercy Falls Novel) by Colleen Coble, and I've been reading:

The Princess Spy by Melanie Dickerson

A parting shot . . . the view out my window this first day of September.

I noticed today as we were driving home that the leaves are already changing color! Crisp fall weather has arrived and while I am enjoying wearing pants and hoodies again I am hoping for one last week of summer weather.... and another trip to the beach.

It's cool here after the rain, but we're headed south for a week! Hoping the weather plays nice while we're traveling.
