Peace of God Bible (Review and Giveaway) #PeaceOfGodBibleMIN

The Peace of God Bible

You were made for peace ― and to be a peacemaker.

The story of the Bible is the story of peace―peace with God and with one another.

But peace isn't simply a feeling of calm or ease. It is a way of experiencing life as we were always meant to―in relationship with our Creator and with each other. We can recover a completeness that was once lost but is restored in the gospel.

The Peace of God Bible invites you to experience peace with God as you trace this important theme throughout Scripture. By meditating on it daily as you read 365 devotions and application notes, you will find the encouragement you need to live out of the wholeness you have in Christ―and be equipped to share that peace with others.

Jeremiah Johnston, PhD (General Editor) Bio: Jeremiah J. Johnston, PhD, is an elected member of the preeminent New Testament scholarly guild Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas (SNTS) and minsters internationally as president of Christian Thinkers Society (www.christianthinkers.com). Jeremiah loves the local church, and also serves as pastor of apologetics and cultural engagement at Prestonwood Baptist Church.

Peace of God Bible features include:

  • Book introductions to help reveal the part peace plays in each book of the Bible
  • 365 devotionals based on a key verse or passage to guide you in how to receive and live by God's peace
  • 365 peace notes offering short, powerful insights to help you understand more deeply the wholeness you have in Christ
  • Topical indexes to help you study on your own how God's peace can shape different relationships in your life
  • Articles explore what the peace of God is, how to find or recover it, and how to experience eternal salvation because of what God has done for you
  • Concise concordance and index of features
  • End-of-page translators' notes and cross-references
  • Line-matched, double-column typesetting
  • Clear and readable 9.5-point NKJV Comfort Print®

My thoughts: Many times I've heard that peace is a theme throughout the Bible, and I know it's true, but seeing the devotionals and Peace Notes on almost every page in the Peace of God Bible really emphasized that truth. Not just in the verses that are very clearly about peace (Psalm 4:8 comes to mind), but in familiar passages that may not explicitly mention peace, such as Psalm 23, and in many passages that we might not associate with teachings about God's peace at all.

This devotional with Psalm 23 highlights just how knowing God as our "Good Shepherd" and understanding that he cares and provides for us leads to our experiencing peace.

The short Peace Notes throughout provide brief reminders on what the Bible says about peace and how applying God's truth will bring us into the peace he has for us. Peace characterizes the "sound heart" spoken of in the Proverbs. This note in the book of Habakkuk sees how the prophet's declaration could be viewed as his own plan for focusing on God's promises and peace, in a way I wouldn't have thought of.

I liked the topical index in the back, because it's a quick reference for seeking Scripture and related devotionals when one is needing to overcome worry and anxiety about specific topics.

His Only Son - Movie Review and Giveaway #HisOnlySonMIN

This post contains affiliate links - using affiliate links from HS Coffee Break helps fuel this blog.

His Only Son, a new movie from  Angel Studios (makers of The Chosen) is coming to theaters starting March 31, 2023. This powerful movie explores the Biblical story of Abraham and his son Isaac. The story in Genesis tells about God speaking to Abraham and promising to make him the father of nations and bless him, and after many years of waiting, Abraham and his wife Sarah finally have a son of their own. But God then calls on Abraham to sacrifice this promised and beloved son.

Make plans today to see HIS ONLY SON in theaters March 31st! Buy tickets at: HisOnlySonMovie.com.

"After being called on by the Lord, Abraham's faith is tested on his three day journey to sacrifice his son."

Synopsis:  His Only Son recounts one of the most controversial moments in the Old Testament―when Abraham was commanded by God to sacrifice his son Isaac on the mountain of Moriah. While traveling to the place of the sacrifice, alongside Isaac and two servants, Abraham is flooded with vivid memories from the years he and Sarah spent longing for the son they were promised―the son he must now lay upon the altar.

My thoughts:  Although the movie essentially begins at the point where God calls Abraham and tells him to give Isaac as a sacrifice, it also lays all the background in a series of memories and flashbacks, so viewers are introduced to Abraham and Sarah in their younger years when God first spoke to Abraham about moving to a new land that God would show him. More memories add to the story of their years of longing for a child and Sarah wondering how God would keep his promises to her husband when she still couldn't get pregnant. Sarah's struggle to understand Abraham's faith in a God that she didn't know and her growing bitterness when she is well past her childbearing years and the promised child still hasn't come is portrayed poignantly.

Isaac's birth to a couple so old brings new life to Sarah and Abraham, and Sarah finds great joy in her son. So how do you think she reacted when Abraham insisted that Isaac was to go along on this journey through the wilderness to sacrifice to God? Don't you think she'd be worried about her elderly husband on this trip as well? What did the servants who accompanied Abraham and Isaac think about the whole situation? What about Isaac himself? I thought the movie did an excellent job of portraying some of the likely actions and reactions, and invited viewers along on the emotional journey as well.

I loved how Isaac's personality was shown, as a kind and generous young man, willing to go out of his way to rescue lost sheep and ready to give up his freedom to save a captive. But what would he do when told that he was to be the sacrifice?

The imagery and language also drew all the appropriate parallels between Abraham's call to give up his only son, and God's plan to sacrifice his only son two thousand years later. The connection to the death and resurrection of Jesus is clear and compelling, so it's just perfect that this movie will be in theaters just before the Easter season.

After my husband and I watched the movie, he remarked that he had expected it to be an Easter movie, a movie about Jesus Christ dying in our place. And in a sense, it is. It points the way to Jesus the Messiah, to his death and resurrection, and helps us understand the greatness of that sacrifice and that gift to us. I hope you'll go see the movie, and I pray you'll be blessed by it.

TomlinUNITED Tour (Announcement and Giveaway)

This post contains affiliate links - using affiliate links from Homeschool Coffee Break helps fuel this blog.

Of all the things we missed over the past year and a half, I've missed live music so much. Concerts and for me, especially live worship music. There's something incredible about being in a large venue filled with people singing praise to God. A little glimpse of singing with the multitudes in heaven, I think!

Well, I'm excited about any news involving live worship music, so I'm happy to be able to add my voice to those announcing this tour - Hillsong UNITED and Chris Tomlin are going on a 33-city tour! Tickets are on sale now - go HERE to find a city near you!

Keep reading for a little about the artists, and for a giveaway featuring their music!

Chris Tomlin has been a wonderful influence on praise and worship music for twenty years, and even if you don't know his name, chances are you know some of the music he's had a hand in writing. Classics like How Great Is Our God, Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone), and The Wonderful Cross come to mind. Those songs, along with Jesus Messiah and Whom Shall I Fear are my own favorites. As a worship leader myself, I love that his music is so accessible - easy for most congregations to learn and sing along. There's something so moving and wonderful about a whole group of people worshiping God together with one voice, and Tomlin is a gifted worship leader.

On this tour, Tomlin is joined by Hillsong United, a group of talented songwriters, musicians, and worship leaders known for songs like Another In The Fire and So Will I. I especially like the songs Oceans (Where Feet May Fail) and Scandal of Grace. Hillsong United is dynamic and exciting on stage, as they invite audiences to worship along with them.

Also featured on this tour is an artist whose music I have really been enjoying recently, Pat Barrett. Barrett has been a singer and songwriter with the band Housefires, and has been a co-writer with Tomlin as well. You might recognize his song The Way, which is one of my current favorites. Another of his well-known songs is Good Good Father, which was recorded by Chris Tomlin.

Visit TomlinUnited to see all the tour dates and to order your tickets today

30 Days to Understanding the Bible (A Review and Giveaway at Just A Second)

This post contains affiliate links - using affiliate links from Homeschool Coffee Break helps fuel this blog and our homeschool - thank you!

This is a review and giveaway originally posted on my book blog, Just A Second. I'm sharing it here as well, because this guidebook would make a great introduction or basis for a Bible credit course for a high school student, and it's great resource for personal or family Bible study.

**********

30 Days to Understanding The Bible by Max Anders - I was delighted to be able to review this handbook for learning about the Bible. Author Dr. Max Anders simplifies the themes and teachings of the Bible without dumbing them down and presents it all in an easy-to-understand format.

Section 1 gives an overview of the history of Israel told in the Old Testament. The wisdom, poetry, and prophetic books are placed into the historical narrative, making it clear where they fit together. Keeping the chronology of the Old Testament straight is a challenge for a lot of people, so I think this is so helpful! The major figures in the history and the general geography are also covered.

Section 2 does a similar overview of the New Testament, explaining the historical narrative and the letters to the churches, and discussing the geographical settings.

Section 3 provides a concise teaching of the ten great doctrines of the Bible, the "basic body of doctrine that nearly all Christians have historically agreed upon." In addition to the Biblical teaching about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, these doctrines include the reliability of Scripture, the nature and destiny of mankind, sin, salvation, and the church.

Readers are encouraged in Section 5 to master the Bible and its teachings, and to study it so deeply that these powerful words affect every part of life. In other words, as the title says, to "Master the Bible So Well that the Bible Masters You". For those wishing to use the book and gain understanding of the Bible in a group setting, Section 6 provides a Teaching Plan for doing just that. By following the suggestions in the Teaching Plan while meeting once a week, participants in a small group could complete the study over a thirteen week period. There is also a section of bonus content such as a comparison of the four gospels, studies of the parables and miracles in the Bible, and an explanation of how Passover and the Lord's Supper are related.

From the publisher:

Do you want to learn the Bible but don't have a lot of time? Do you need a quick refresher on what you already know? If so, 30 Days to Understanding the Bible is for you. With just fifteen minutes a day, for one month, you'll learn the Bible's key people, events, and doctrines. Using a proven study plan, author Max Anders breaks down the Bible's structure so you can learn and remember the key points of the Bible's text quickly.

30 Days to Understanding the Bible is the straightforward, easy-to-use guide to learning the Bible that's been recommended by Bible teachers and pastors for 30 years.

Dr. Max Anders is the author of over 25 books. He has taught on the college and seminary level and is a veteran pastor. Max was also one of the original team members with Walk Thru the Bible Ministries. He provides resources and discipleship strategies at MaxAnders.com to help people grow spiritually.

Magic Stix Markers from The Pencil Grip (Review and Giveaway)

This post contains affiliate links - using affiliate links from Homeschool Coffee Break helps fuel this blog and our homeschool - thank you!
Magic Stix Markers from The Pencil Grip (Review and Giveaway) - A Homeschool Coffee Break Review for the Homeschool Review Crew @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

Time for another review that's all about fun and creativity - we received a set of Magic Stix Washable Markers from The Pencil Grip, Inc. to try out. We've enjoyed reviewing their solid tempera paints in the past, so we looked forward to trying out their new markers as well. And by the way, The Pencil Grip, Inc. has generously allowed me to host a giveaway for a set of Magic Stix, so keep reading for the details near the end of this review.

The Pencil Grip, Inc. is best known for the product that gave the company its name - the Pencil Grip - but they also provide several other therapeutic products and toys, as well as Kwik Stix, a line of solid tempera paints in marker form. We've reviewed Thin Stix and Kwik Stix in the past, and you can find our reviews here: Creativity with Kwik Stix and Kwik Stix Solid Tempera Paints.

Magic Stix are bright colored, washable markers that are guaranteed to not dry out. They're also advertised as having no odor, and we certainly didn't notice any smell. Magic Stix are available in a classic color pack of twelve, or in the 24 pack of bold and classic colors that we received.

How did we use it? We (which means mostly Kennady) drew pictures, colored, and doodled. We didn't specifically test the markers for not drying out, but Kennady commented that even after using the black marker a lot, it was showing no signs of running out or drying out. It's a good sign to find that these markers continue to have bold color after a lot of use and after several weeks. Obviously, for those that have younger kids that are prone to forget to put lids on, a marker that won't dry out is pretty valuable!

Kennady drew and colored cartoon type characters with the markers and was very pleased with them.

After doing this pirate, she commented to me that she was so happy that this pack of markers included a grey. She used it for a little shading, and according to her (she's the expert on art supplies, at least in comparison to what I know about it!) a grey marker is a bit of a rarity. It's the little things. She also pointed out that the lightest pinkish color in the set is really good for fair skin tones - another hard to find color in smaller sized marker sets. In other words, the 24 pack has a great selection of colors!

Some doodling and testing - she was impressed with how bold the black was when she did this Mickey Mouse only a couple days ago.

Kennady likes markers for her coloring books, so I decided I would give the Magic Stix a try for my own coloring. So I can say that even I have tried them! They are very nice to use, with lots of bright color. And they didn't smell nasty, which I really appreciated! It certainly looks like we can expect to get lots of color for quite some time from these markers!

What we liked best:
  • bright colors that so far show no signs of drying out
  • a super selection of colors, including that elusive grey!
  • not a super fine point, but fine enough to do a decent amount of detail, as you can see in my coloring and some of Kennady's work
  • okay, and the case. They come in a flat-out awesome and durable case. Bonus!

Our bottom line: Another great art product from The Pencil Grip! Bright colors that really last are a winner no matter what the age of the artist.

Creativity With Kwik Stix (A Homeschool Coffee Break Review and Giveaway)

Creativity with Kwik Stix (A Homeschool Coffee Break Review and Giveaway) on Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

Once again, we had the chance to have some fun with mess-free paints from The Pencil Grip, Inc., and bring you a review. This time we received the Thin Stix Creativity Pack, with 24 fun colors. And The Pencil Grip, Inc. has generously allowed me to host a giveaway for a pack of Thin Stix, so keep reading for the details near the end of this review.

The Pencil Grip, Inc.

Although The Pencil Grip, Inc. is known for their signature product, the Pencil Grip, which comes in several different styles, they also provide other therapeutic products and toys, and the popular line of Kwik Stix paints. These are tempera paints that dry very quickly and are in a marker form, so they're very easy to use, and with little to no mess to clean up.

Kwik Stix come in two sizes - regular Kwik Stix, and Thin Stix, which have a narrower barrel and create a slightly finer line - and in several different package sizes. The Thin Stix Creativity Pack contains 12 classic colors, 6 neon colors, and 6 Metalix colors. It's tempera paint, so it works on many different surfaces, and it dries very quickly. There's no water or paintbrushes needed either!

How did we use it? Well, my daughter is in high school, so I figured she could be trusted to be creative with these paints without my supervision! All she needed was a little spare time (very hard to come by these days!) and some ideas of what to create. Although the easy handling of the marker style paints and their no-mess features make these paints the perfect choice for young kids, I think they appeal just as much to teens and adults. After all, Kennady could take them to her room with no worries about spilling or smearing her carpet or desk or the cat knocking it over. Which, believe me, the cat would try to do if there was a cup of water.

With this painting on paper, it was a challenge to blend the light colors for the fog, but she liked the definition in the blue circles.

In the past, we've used the paints on paper and canvas. This time she tried paper and wood. Following is a progression of a holiday decor project on a sheet of balsa wood. She had to work very quickly when she wanted to blend colors.

This project was completed using classic colors for all except the snowflakes and lettering, which are done in silver Metalix.  The eyes, smile, and buttons on the snowman were added using a fine point marker.

Once again, these non-messy paints were a huge hit, and because they dry so quickly, the entire snowman project could be completed in an evening, without needing to wait for layers of paint of dry before moving on to the next color or add details.

What we liked best:
  • no mess! In other words, next to no effort required to clean up afterwards!
  • good coverage of colors and they go down evenly
  • no wait time while paints dry
What we need to mention:
  • blending colors can be difficult, since they dry so quickly
  • if you're wondering why these are recommended for ages 3 and up, it's because of the choking hazard if the paints come apart. We used up all the black, and it did come apart making a bit of mess and I could see how it would be a choking hazard. Just be careful when you start running out of paint and don't try to take it apart! By the way, we used what seemed like a ton of black paint before realizing that maybe this marker was getting low.
Creativity with Kwik Stix (A Homeschool Coffee Break Review and Giveaway) on Homeschool Coffee Break @ kympossibleblog.blogspot.com

Our bottom line: Although my student using these is an older teen, I highly recommend these paints for families with younger kids who want to be creative. Without a lot of time required for set-up or clean-up, these non-toxic bright colors would be perfect for quick art projects. They are even easy to pack up and take along, and even small hands should be able to manipulate the markers much more easily than paintbrushes.
